Notes:

Alvah Townsend was one of the younger of his parents' children, and was born in the state of New York, in 1830 or 1831. He was still a small lad when he was brought to Indiana by his parents, and grew up amid rural pioneer surroundings in Washington township, his educational advantages being confined to several winter terms in the primitive district schools. Subsequently Mr. Townsend became the owner of forty acres of the old homestead place, which he farmed until being drafted in the Thirty-first Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, for service in the Union army during the Civil War. At the close of struggle, with his honorable discharge and a record for soldierly bravery and faithful service, Mr. Townsend returned to his home and resumed agricultural operations, later becoming the manager of the Co. A. E. Steel homestead, containing about a section of land in Licking township, of which he remained as the directing head for thirty-two or thirty-three years. He then purchased eighty acres of land in sections 6 and 7, in Licking township, upon which his home was made for several years, he then moved to what was known as the Adam Shields farm, in Washington township, where his death occurred in 1909. He was a prominent man in his community, was active in democratic politics, and was a faithful member of the Universalist church. In Washington township, Mr. Townsend was married to Miss Elzary Shields, who was born in Virginia, and was a young woman when she came to Washington township with her parents, Adam and Anna Shields, who were pioneer farmers here and lived to advanced ages. They had a large family of children, of whom Elzary died in 1913, when about seventy-eight years of age, a member of the Sole Steeple church, now defunct. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, of whom one is deceased, and ten are now living, married and with families. ============= Thirty-first Infantry INDIANA (3 years) Thirty-first Infantry.: Cols.,Charles Cruft, John Osborn, John T. This regiment was organized at Terre Haute and was mustered in Sept. 16, 1861. It left the state the following week, went into camp at Calhoun, Ky. and from there proceeded to Fort Donelson, where it participated in the battle and was present at t surrender losing 12 killed, 52 wounded and 4 missing. It moved to Fort Henry, thence to Pittsburg Landing and was actively engaged at Shiloh, losing 22 killed, 110 wounded and 10 missing. It was assigned to the 4th division, Army of Ohio, in command of Gen. Nelson. It was in the siege of Corinth and its conclusion joined the march through Alabama and Mississippi into Tennessee being stationed at various places. Col. Cruft was appointed brigadier-general on July 16, and Lieut.-Col. Osborn was made his successor. The regiment fell back to Louisville in September, but returned to Nashville when Bragg was driven from Kentucky. It moved in December for Murfreesboro and participated in the three days' battle at Stone's River, losing 5 killed and 46 wounded. It was then at Cripple Creek until June, guarding a mountain pass, then moved toward Chattanooga and participated in the battle of Chickamauga, where it lost 4 killed and 66 wounded. At Bridgeport, Ala., it reenlisted as a veteran organization, Jan. 1, 1865, and was furloughed home in February. It was stationed at Ooltewah, Tenn., until the beginning of the Atlanta campaign, when, as part of the 4th corps, it participated in t various skirmishes and battles attending that movement. After the capture of Atlanta the regiment joined in pursuit of Hood's army to Pulaski, Tenn., proceeding from there to Nashville, where it took part in the battle in December afterward pursuing Hood's army as far as Huntsville, Ala. It was in a brief campaign in eastern Tennessee, and then was at Nashville from April until the middle of June, 1865, when it was ordered to New Orleans and from there to Texas, marching to the interior of the state and being stationed at Green Lak It was mustered out Dec. 8, 1865. The original strength was 1,038; gain by recruits, 563; reenlistments 285; total, 1,886. Loss by death, 366; desertion, 76; unaccounted for, 13. Source: The Union Army, vol. 3

Notes:

Accounted on of the progressive and practical agriculturists of Blackford county, Elijah Townsend has been a resident of this locality all of his life, and through earnest and consective labor has gained a position high in the esteem of his fellow citizens. Although a firm believer in methods that are time tried and known to be practicable, he has kept himself thoroughly abreast of the times in all things, and his activities have been rewarded in a manner commensurate with their merits. Mr Townsend was born on a farm in Washington township, Blackford county, Indiana, January 10, 1851, and is a son of Alvah and Elzary (Shields) Townsend. Elijah Townsend has devoted himself to the cultivation of the soil since boyhood. He grew up on the homestead place, and when not engaged in attending the public schools was to be found at work with his father and brother, thus securing a thorough training for what he has since made his life work. His present property, located in section 6, Licking township, is under a high state of cultivation, is furnished with modern and substantial buildings, and has up-to-date improvements of every kin As a business man Mr. Townsend is entitled to the respect and esteem always commanded by men of integrity, and as a farmer and stock raiser he is thoroughly conversant with conditions and methods. Mr. Townsend was married in Licking Township, Blackford county, Indiana, to Miss Rachel Ann Farmer, who was born in Delaware County in 1856, and died at the home place in section 6, March 18, 1898. She was the mother of the following children: Charles, assisting his father in the cultivation of the home farm, married Laura Jones, the daughter of Frank Jones, and has four sons and two daughters. The oldest child is Olie, the wife of Charles Thomelson, a farmer of Grant county, and has fi sons; William, a farmer near Berne, Indiana, married and has five children; Fred, living at Hartford City, where he is connected with the Willer store, married and has six children; Adam, a worker in the oil fields of Illinois, married and has thre children; and Oma, the wife of Sylvester Casterline, engaged in glassworking at Hartford City, and has two daughters. Mr. Townsend is a democrat, but has not taken an active part in public affairs, outside of supporting movements for the progress and advancement of the community. His acquaintance, secured during his long residence here, is extensive, and his frie are numerous.

Notes:

ANDREW JACKSON TOWNSEND Standing a fair representative of the more progressive and enterprising agriculturists of the county, Mr. Townsend well deserves attention at the hands of him who attempts to consider, from the historical standpoint, the men who are conducting the multifarious interests of this section of the state, as the old century passes and the new one presents questions not heretofore considered, but whose solution demands the brightest minds. Mr. Townsend represents one of the oldest families of the county, his birth having occurred in Washington township on the 9th of February, 1854. More complete mention of the family will be found in connection with the memoir of the venerable James S. Townsend, uncle of Andrew. One of the several brother was Alvah Townsend, father of Andrew, who is still residing in Washington; he was born in New Jersey and was married in this county to Miss Elzara Shields, a native of Ohio. The boyhood of Andrew was spent on the home farm with but little out of the ordinary course, he remaining with his father til past twenty-four years of age. He chose for his companion Miss Rebecca Miles, daughter of Alfred and Lucinda (Gillaspie) Miles, to whom he was united on the 6th of November, 1877. His father having deeded him a tract of land near his present home, he devoted considerable time and effort to its improvement, among other features being a new house. However, soon after his marriage he secured the tract that comprises the present homestead, which at the time had but about fourteen acres cleared. This immediate section of the country is flat and in its original condition of comparatively little value, but, now that it has been thoroughly drained, which process required a great deal of labor and expense, covering a period of several years before the system was completed, it is in many respects the most desirable and excellent part of the country. Mr. Townsend took an active interest in securing the general improvement, as his own tract was covered with ponds, and it was necessary in order to improve his own farm. This farm he sold in 1892, securing his present homestead of seventy-five acres. He has cleared about twenty acres, and by tilling extensively has it in an excellent state of cultivation. His estate is really divided into two neat farms, each having its complements of buildings. The home place is an especially desirable one, located as it is, in a neat grove of natural trees. Mr. Townsend devotes his entire attention to the operation of his farm, the principle feature of which is the growing of grain, and in this is usually converted into stock of his own breeding. His family consists of eight children born in the following order: Lucy, wife of John Bosworth, who has management of one of the farms; Elmore, George Norman, Gertrude, Frank, Trepolia, Thomas and Mary. In politics Mr. Townsend is a Democrat in his predilections, but is not offensively partisan, as he confines his party acts and votes to local matters. Though his sound sense and popularity he has been frequently called upon to serve on various committees and to sit in the conventions of his party, in whose interests he is quite active in all campaign work. Fraternally he is a member of Hartford Tent, No. 50, Knights of Maccabees. While not being pronounced in his religious views he recognizes the value of church influence, contributing by his presence and means.
