Notes:

He studied medicine with Dr. Bard, one of the most eminent physicians in New York. After he married Mary Hicks on April 2, 1757, he settled upon his father's homestead at Jericho, where he practiced medicine. He was a member of the Provincial Congress before the British took possession of the Town, and was elected a member of the first Federal Congress, in 1789, but he died before the session opened. Within a few days, Dr. Townsend and four of his children were taken ill and died. On the evening of Friday, May 7, 1790, Mary died; on Wednesday, the 12th, both Samuel and Almy died; Phebe died the night of Friday, the 14th. Dr. Townsend lingered until Monday, the 24th, when he died, and a servant-woman some time in the interval. The cause of this fearful mortality is unknown, but in a letter from Mary to Phebe dated April 28, 1790, she described her mother's symptoms as severe chills and shivering followed by severe, sharp pains that seemed to move to various parts of the body. These symptoms alternated with periods of copious perspiration. The malady seemed to be confined to that house. The mother eventually recovered, as did the son James, but they were so weak that their neighbors attended to all their farming operations. The Townsend Memorial, pp. 103-117.
