Member of the NJ Legislature 1784-1793, 1796-1797 Will: In the name of God, Amen. I, Elijah Townsend of the middle Township of the County of Cape May and State of New Jersey being sick in body but of sound mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give my soul into the hand of almighty God that gave it and my Body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent christian buryal at the discretion of my executors and on Touching such wordly Estate and has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, divine and disprove of same in the following manner and form. First, I Give and bequeath to Judith Townsend, my dearly beloved wife during her widowhood ^the use^ all the buildings on the Farm where I now live Together with Six acres of Ground adjoining athe same and below the main Sea Shore Road. I also give and bequeath to Judith Townsend my dearly beloved wife the mare that I know own, One Featherbed and furniture, all the Cupboard Furniture, all the meat now on hand and all the grain in the Ground, also twelve dollars per year to be paid to her by my Son Jehu Townsend and twelve dollars per year to be paid to her by my son Elijah Townsend during her natural life. I also give and bequeath unto my two sons Enoch Townsend and Elijah Townsend the Farm that I Own in the upper Township of said County bounded by the lands of James Holmes, Amos Cresse and others to be equally divided between them in value So that all the buildings thereon falls on the part set off to the said Elijah. I also Give and bequeath unto my two Sons Jehu Townsend and Eli Townsend the Farm whereon I now live to be equally divided in value so that the said Jehu share falls on the side next to James Holmes. I also give and bequeath the piece of Cripple in the Great Cedar Swamp in said upper Township and near Shingle neck to my two sons John Townsend and Elijah Townsend to be equally divided between them in value. I also five and bequeath to my son Eli Townsend and my daughter Judith Swain the piece of worked out Cedar Swamp and the Peach Orchard in said upper Township to be equally divided between them in value. I also give and beaueath unto my sons Jehu Townsend, Elijah Townsend and Eli Townsend and my daughter Judith Swain all my meadow situate in said upper township and between Townsend and the Middle Thoroughfares to be equally divided between them in value. I also Order and it is my will that all the above bequeaths to my Children namely Enoch Townsend, Jehu Townsend, Elijah Townsend, Judith Swain, and Eli Townsend be to them their heirs and assigns forever. I also give and bequeath to my son John Townsend, two dollars. I also give and bequeath to my son Eli Townsend my ten plate Stove also the Bed and furniture that he has heretofore called his I also give and bequeath all the residue of my moveable estate after debts and expenses is paid to Judith Townsend my dearly beloved wife and my daughters Judith Swain to be equally divided between them. I also Order and it is my will that all the abvove specifyed legacies be kept out of the Inventory of my personal estate and also that my son Jehu Townsend and Elijah Townsend be the appraisers of my estate. Partly I nominate and appoint my dearly beloved wife Judith Townsend my Executrix and my Son Eli Townsend and my nephew Joshua Swain Executors of this my last will and Testament and do hereby utterly disavow, revoke and disannul all and every other former Testatments, Wills, Legacies, bequests by me in any were before mentioned ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of July in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Nineteen Signed, Sealed, published pronounced and declared by the said Elijah Townsend as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names.
