Garr Family Origins
History
The Garr name (Gar, Gaar)" is distinctly and purely German, and is not traceable to either the Celts, Goths, Gauls,
or Romans."¹
The Garr's "coming from Franconia are an old and very good family and carry in the blue field of the crest two black lilies,
which proves the eminence of the family. I the red field, two half black eagles, which symbolize the age of the family tree. An open
knight's helmet on which a crown is posted and on the top two eagles' wings, symbolize the ascent of the family. The helmet color is
red and silver.
This crest they have received as a reward from Emperor Charles the Fifth in the year 1519."²
To-date, the earliest known Garr in our family line is Bernard Garr who was born in Wales.
