Haley, Alta Myrtle Reames

Alta M. Haley, 77, of 8601 Upper West Thomas St., passed away Thursday, August 14, 1997, in Rome Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born February 19, 1920, in Rome, NY, a daughter of Harold and Myrtle Cook Reames. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy class of 1939.

Alta was united in marriage to James N. Haley. He passed away in 1974. She was an employee at the former Rome State School for 25 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Lee Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 1794, Lee Center Senior Citizens and was an avid camper at Stoney Knolls Campgrounds.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James and Dawn Haley, a brother, Carlton Reames, all of Rome, three grandchildren Shane, James and Leon Haley, four great-grandchildren, David, Shane, Joshua and Taylor Haley.

Funeral will be held Saturday. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery.


Haley, James N.

James N. Haley, 54, of Upper West Thomas St., a former Oneida County deputy sheriff, died Sunday in Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, after an illness of six months.

He was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Rome, a son of William C. and Florence A. Bingham Haley and educated in Rome schools.

On Oct. 19, 1940, he married Alta M. Reames in St. Mary's Church, Rome.

Mr. Haley lived in Rome most of his life except for a few years when he resided in Ava.

He served as deputy sheriff under Sheriffs Archie G. Eastman and Joseph A. Piccola. He later operated a general construction company and was last employed as an assistant warden at the county jail.

Two brothers, Lt. John W. Haley Sr., and Capt. Edward G. Haley, are both members of the Rome Police Department.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James D. Haley, Rome, three sisters, Mrs. James A. (Ellen) Dunn Sr., Mrs. Leo J. (Celeste) Washburn Sr., both of Rome, Mrs. Peter (Patricia) Charney, Lee, three brothers, John W. Haley Sr., Edward G. Haley, both of Rome, and Joel B. Haley Sr., Oneida, and three grandchildren.

A sister, Mrs. Joseph (Lucille) Albamski, died March 21, 1966. A brother, Richard S. Haley, died Dec. 13, 1964. ANother brother, Lauren C. Haley died on Nov. 30, 1968.

Funeral will be held Wednesday with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.


Hall, Ella M. Cook

Taberg - Mrs. Ella M. Hall, 62, widow of Henry B. Hall, died at 6:30 am today at Camden where she had been for a week. She had been in ill health for a year. She was born in Town of Lee, Oct. 16, 1881, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Chauncey Cook. Her marriage to Mr. Hall took place in Camden on March 19, 1901. Mr. Hall died in 1934. Mrs. Hall was a member of the Methodist Church and of the W.S.C.S. of the Church, and was past president of the Ladies Aid Society and a vice-president of the Christian Service Relations Committee. She leaves two sons, Earl and George Hall, a granddaughter, Sheila Hall and a sister, Mrs. Curtis Johnson, all of Taberg. Funeral will be Monday, interment in Maple Hill.


Hall, Henry

Taberg - A heart attack suffered late Wednesday afternoon at the plant of the Rome Company at Rome proved fatal to Henry B. Hall,life long and well known resident of this village. Mr. Hall had been an employe at the Rome Plant for the past 13 years. Mr. Hall was born at the Hall homestead three miles from here November 3, 1878, a son of the late John & Angeline Pexton Hall. He was engaged in farming until 1921 when he came to the village. For two years he was a rural mail carrier from the local office to Blossvale and Glenmore. Four years ago he and his wife took over the management of a business place here, which has become known as Hall's Coffee Shop and gas station. He was a member and a trustee of the Methodist Church and was a member of the bible class and the Epworth League of the church. He enjoyed the friendship of a large circle and was esteemed throughout the community. He was married March 19, 1901, to Miss Ella Cook of Lee, who survives. He leaves also two sons, Earl, at home, and George of this village, and two sisters, Mrs. Etta Farley and Mrs. Clarence Preston of Rome. The body was brought today to the home of Mrs. Hall's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Curtis Johnson, by B. A. Sanborn. Friends may call at the Johnson home at their convenience. Burial will be in Maple Hill.


Hamilton, Floyd E.

Funeral services for Floyd E. Hamilton, RD 1, Hastings, who died March 8, were held at 2 pm today at the Griffin and Aldridge Funeral Home.

The Rev. Alvin C. Goddard, DD, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated.

Interment was made in Rome Cemetery with Henry Beers, Gaylord Sweatman, Floyd Wilson and Oscar Beers as bearers.

Floral pieces were received from Columbus School teachers, neighbors, relatives and friends.


Hamilton, Harold E.

Harold E. Hamilton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd E. Hamilton, 729 Armstrong Avenue, died at 5:15 o'clock this morning. He had been in declining health for about five months, and had been confined in bed 18 weeks. last February he strained the ligaments of his right leg while engaged in athletics and later he fell on an icy sidewalk, aggravating the former injury, the ravages of the resultant disease of the leg finally caused his death.

He was born in Utica June 6, 1902, being in his 20th year. his parents located in Rome when he was one year old. he was educated in the Rome schools, was a member of the First M. E. Church and Sunday School and the Live Wire Club of the Church. he was in the employ of the Rome Iron Mills Inc. in the chemistry department.

Harold Hamilton was a favorite with everybody who knew him. He was a good companion, honorable, industrious, a good athlete, and loyal to his many friends who will deeply regret his untimely passing. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Marguerite, aged 3 years.


Hamilton, Lena M. Cook

Mrs. Lena M. Hamilton, 64, wife of Floyd E. Hamilton, 916 Elwood Street, died early this morning at a Rome hospital where she had been a patient for seven weeks. She had been in ill health for some time.

Born in the Town of Annsville, Dec. 17, 1882, she was the daughter of Elisha and Caroline Youngs Cook. On Feb. 14, 1901, in Utica, she became the wife of Mr. Hamilton. She had been a resident of Rome for the past 43 years. She attended the First Methodist Church.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, mrs. Theodore June, Syracuse, a sister, Mrs. Mary Washburn, Rome, and three grandchildren. A son died in 1921.


Haarding, Gladys Link

McConnellsville - Mrs. Gladys L. Harden, 94, of McConnellsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1989, at her home after a long illness.

Born in Blossvale, Feb. 6, 1895, she was the daughter of Ellsworth and Arabella Cook Link. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. On Sep. 23, 1919, she married Harry A Harden in Blossvale. He died Feb. 13, 1950

Mrs. Harden was a member of McConnellsville Community Church, serving as choir director for several years, Vienna Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, McConnellsville Gardens Club, and McConnellsville Women's Guild.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Ann) Babcock, McConnellsville, a son, David E. Harden, McConnellsville, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held Saturday at McConnellsville Cemetery.


Harding, Harry A.

McConnellsville - Harry A. Harden, 57, president of the Frank S. Harden Furniture COmpany, died suddenly at his home here last night following an acute heart attack.

His entire life had been spent in McConnellsville. He was born Aug. 15, 1892, a son of Frank S. and Olive Chrestien Harden.

Mr. Harden was a graduate from Manlius Military Academy and was a veteran of World War I.

In 1910, with a brother, Clarence C. Harden, he entered his fathers furniture corporation, the Frank S. Harden Company.

Mr. Harden was one of the founders of the Camden Wire Company and served as its vicepresident. He also was president of the McConnellsville Water Company and president of the McConnellsville Cemetery Association.

He was a member of the McConnellsville Community Church and a member of its official board.

Greatly interested in Boy Scout work, Mr. Harden was Committeeman of Troop 16 of McConnellsville, and had at one time served as chairman of finance for the district council.

He also was a member of Arthur S. Moran Post, American Legion, Camden.

Active in Masonic circles, he was a member of Vienna Lodge, 440, F & AM, and had served the lodge as Master. He wa also a member of Darius Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Camden, Rome Commandery, Knights Templar, and Almar Temple of the Shrine at Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Harden was a member of the Onondaga Country Club, Syracuse,

Surviving are his wife, the former Gladys Link, whom he married Sept. 23, 1919, in Blossvale, a son, David E. Harden, a daughter, Mrs. Gordon W. Babcock, and a grandson, Christopher Harden Babcock, all of McConnellsville, two brothers, Charles H. Harden and Clarence C. McConnellsville. Also several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in McConnellsville Cemetery.


Haskins, Ada May Holcomb Cook

Brantingham - Mrs. Ada May Haskins, 92, a resident of the Sunset Nursing Home, Boonville, and a former chamber maid at the Mohawk Hotel on Fourth Lake, died today, March 21, 1988, in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where she had been a patient for two days.

Mrs. Haskins was born in Port Leyden on Oct. 12, 1895, daughter of Elmer and Stella Holcomb. She married Clarence Cooke and later married Larry Haskins. They are both deceased.

Mrs. Haskins was a graduate of Port Leyden High School. She worked as a chamber maid for 10 years.

Surviving are a daughter, A. Betty Gillen, Brantingham, and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Wayne Cooke, on April 4, 1984.

Services will be Wednesday. Burial will be in Brantingham Cemetery.
