Small, Florence Dean

Sylvan Beach - Mrs. Rexford D. Florence M. Small, 56, of 10th Ave., died at her home Monday. She was born in the Town of Annsville daughter of John and Lillian Crossman Dean, and was married to Mr. Small July 8, 1921, by the Rev. Walter Clement, Taberg. They resided in Rome and Taberg before moving here 20 years ago. Mrs. Small was a member of Taberg Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, three daughters, Mrs. William Roberts, McConnellsville, Mrs.John Parrott, Sylvan Beach, and Miss Shirley Small, at home, a son, Rexford D. Small Jr., Rome, two brothers, Harold Dean, Taberg, and Arthur Dean, Verona Beach, a sister, Mrs. Lester Infanger, Verona Beach, six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 at the Sanborn Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. James Ballantyne, pastor of the North Bay Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.


Small, Rexford D.

Sylvan Beach - Rexford D. Small, 89, of Pine Avenue, a retired employee of Revere Copper and Brass, died Thursday, April 10, 1986, in Rome Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Small was employed at Revere for more than 40 years, retiring in 1962.

Born in New Hamburg on March 4, 1897, he was a son of Arthur and Ida Terwilliger Small. He married Florence Dean in Taberg. She died in 1962. He later married Jessie Wilson. She died in 1969.

Mr. Small was a Navy Veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Sylvan Beach American Legion and the Vienna Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are three daughters, Miss Shirley Small, with whom he resided, Mrs. William (Lillian) Roberts, Blossvale, and Mrs. John (Sandra) Parrott, Sylvan Beach, a son, Rexford D. Small, Rome, a brother, George Small, Syracuse, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.


Small, Shirley B.

Shirley B. Small, 74, of 717 Pine Ave., Sylvan Beach, passed away on January 18, 2005 at her residence after a long illness. She was born on February 7, 1930 in Taberg, the daughter of Rexford and Florence Dean Small. She was educated in Oneida Schools and was last employed at Smith-Lee Co. in Oneida for over 35 years. Shirley was a member of the Taberg Methodist Church and enjoyed going bowling.

Surviving are her two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lillian Warner, Sylvan Beach, Sandra and John Parrott, Sylvan Beach, a brother Rex Small, Whitesboro, along with several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 pm from Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Camden. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery.


Stratton, Anna Cooley

Clinton - Mrs. William W. Stratton, 45, of 3 Borkley Drive, died Monday in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center after having been in poor health for the past two years.

The daughter of Lillian Petch Cooley and the late Oliver Cooley, she was born Nov. 22, 1912 in Utica and was educated in Clinton schools.

Mrs. Stratton had been employed for more than 20 years in the Clinton office of the New York Telephone Co. She was married to Mr. Stratton on Aug. 31, 1935.

Mrs. Stratton was a member of St. Mary's Church, Clinton, and its Rosary - Altar Society.

Besides her husband and mother she leaves a daughter, Miss Annette Stratton, Clinton, three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Matteson, Cedarville, Mrs. Arthur Dawes and Mrs. Paul Hoff, both of Clinton, a brother, Francis Cooley of Utica, and several nieces and nephews.


Stratton, Bertha M. Schilling

Mrs. Bertha M. Stratton 61, 309 Expense Street, wife of William W. Stratton, died at 6 o'clock this morning at her home after an illness of one day. Born Dec. 13, 1883, in Rome, the daughter of Sebastion and Elizabeth Schneible Schilling, she was married to William W. Stratton, Sept. 20, 1928, in Rome. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. Surviving besides her husband are a sister, Mrs. Henry Masset; a brother, Alfred M. Schilling; two nieces and two nephews, all of Rome.


Stratton, Carrie L. Reil

Mrs. Carrie L. Stratton, 73, 612 W. Bloomfield St., widow of Julius (Joe) Stratton, died this morning at the Rome Hospital where she had been a patient for the past five weeks. She was born in Rome on June 23, 1878, the daughter of Fred and Louis Gunther Reil. She and Mr. Stratton, who died Dec. 11, 1932, were married in Rome Sept. 2, 1901. Mrs. Stratton lived in Hamilton for 35 years before returning to Rome. While there she attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was a charter member of the Eastern Star in Hamilton and a past matron of that order. Upon returning to Rome, where she attended schools as a youth, she became a member of the past matrons club of the Lake Delta Chapter, OES. She was a member of Zion Episcopal Church and the Parish Guild. She was also a member of the past matron's club of the Lewis-Oneida District, OES. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. George Kessler, Rome, two sons, W. Wesley Stratton, Clinton, and Donald E. Stratton, Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Deming and Mrs. Frank Smith, Rome; two brothers William and Fred Reil, both of Rome; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.


Stratton, David S.

David Sidney Stratton, 79, of 309 Expense St., died yesterday in the Rome Hospital. He had been ill for about two years. After a fall which resulted in the breaking of his hip last Saturday he was confined to the Rome Hospital until his death. Born July 11, 1866, in Taberg, the son of Filos and Nancy L. Crossman Stratton, he came to Rome in 1901 from Clinton where he was educated. He became foreman in the Rome Locomotive works. Mr. Stratton retired 15 years ago. Surviving are a brother, William W., with whom he made his home; a niece, Mrs. George Kessler, Rome, and two nephews, Wesley Stratton, Clinton, and Donald Stratton, Rome.


Stratton, Donald E.

Donald E. Stratton, 88, of 6345 Pleasant Drive, Town of Lee, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at Rome Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born January 5, 1914 in Hamilton, NY, the son of Julius L. and Carrie L. Reil Stratton. He attended Hamilton Schools and on January 6, 1938, he married Irene Dickinson in Zion Episcopal Church. She died December 2, 1979. During World War II, Donald worked for Union Fork and Hoe, Rome. He also worked for Kilgard Supply Company and retired from Nolan Hayes and Warcup. He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church and attended Lee Center Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lee Center Leesure Walkers, Baron Steuben Lodge #264 F & AM, Ziyara Shrine Directors Staff, Scottish Rite Consistory, the Western Shrine Club, Ft. Stanwix Shrine Club, Universal Craftsmen Council of Engineers, Utica Maennerchor, Utica Elks Lodge #33, AARP, and past member of the Ziyara Motor Corps.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Muriel and Gary Boulerice, Town of Western, one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Diane Stratton, Rome, grandchildren Donald Boulerice, Daryn Boulerice, Tracy Jensen, Kelly and Jayme Stratton, and one great-granddaughter, Allison Boulerice, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William Wes Straton, and a sister, Elizabeth Stratton Kessler.

Funeral services will be held at the Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc. Thursday. Interment will be in Rome Cemetey.


Stratton, Irene Dickinson

Mrs. Irene D. Stratton, 69, of 23 Pleasant Drive, a private duty nurse, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 1979, after a long illness. Born Dec. 30, 1909, in Manchester, England, she was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah Hewitt Dickinson. In 1932 she moved to Rome, where she was married to Donald E. Stratton Jan. 6, 1938, in Zion Episcopal Church. Mrs. Stratton attended Bangor Girls School and Manchester Elm School, both in Manchester, England. A registered nurse majoring in psychiatry, she graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute and Ontario Hospital, both in Brockville, Canada. Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Muriel) Boulerice, Sly Hill, Town of Western, a son, Richard A. Stratton, Rome, two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Muriel) Frankey, Rome, and Mrs. Chris (Anna) Dodds, Brockville, Canada, and four grandchildren. Private services will be held Tuesday at the Prince and Boyd Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery.


Stratton, Julius

Julius L. (Joe) Stratton, 64, a former resident of Rome, died yesterday at his home at 26 Montgomery street, Hamilton, where he had resided since 1902. He had been ill for the past two years and confined to his bed with complications for three months. Mr. Stratton was born at Taberg on October 27, 1868, the son of the late Philos and Nancy L. Stratton. He was a canner for the past 40 years and was last employed by the Clinton Canning Company of Clinton. He was a past master of Hamilton Masonic Lodge No. 120. On December 24, 1890, he was married to Minnie Wilkinson who passed away January 9, 1900. On September 2 of the next year Mr. Stratton married Carrie L. Rell, also of Rome, who survives with a daughter, Mrs. George E. Kessler of Rome, and two sons, Donald and Wesley at home. Also surviving two brothers, David S. and William W. Stratton of Rome, a sister, Mrs. Frank Korber of Whitesboro, and three grandchildren, Betty, Kathryn and Dorothy Kessler of Rome.


Stratton, Minnie Wilkinson

At her home, 409 N. Madison Street, at 10:30 pm on Tuesday, occurred the death of Mrs. Joseph L. Stratton from dropsy. She had been failing in health for a long time and confined to the house since last August and to her bed for four weeks. The deceased, whose maiden name was Minnie A. Wilkinson, was born in Rome on February 7, 1865, and was a daughter of Mr. and the late Mrs. George E. Wilkinson. She received her education in the city schools. For the past ten years she had been a member of the Presbyterian church. Besides her husband, whom she married December 24, 1890, she is survived by one daughter, Phoebe Elizabeth, her father and two brothers, Elmer E. and William E. Wilkinson, all of this city.


Stratton, Nancy Louise Crossman

Rome - March 14 - Nancy Louise Crossman, widow of Philos Stratton, died Sunday at her home, 309 Expense Street. She had been in poor health for a long time and had been confined to the bed for five weeks. She was born in Glenmore July 8, 1840, a daughter of John and Martha Crossman. When she was five years old her parents moved to Taberg and there, in 1862, she married Mr. Stratton, who died in December, 18 years ago, at Clinton, where the family moved in 1880. She then came here to make her home with her children, who were devoted to her and did all they could to make her life pleasant and happy. Mrs. Stratton was a kindly woman and during her residence here made many pleasant friends and acquaintances who were saddened to learn of her passing away. She was a member of the First ME Church and before her health failed took a deep interest in its affairs. The following children survive: David S. and William W. Stratton of this city, with whom she made her home, Julius L. Stratton of Hamilton, and Mrs. George Adams of Clinton, and one brother and one sister, C. E. Crossman of this city and Mrs. Josephine Hess of Utica, besides three grandchildren, Mrs. George Kessler of this city and Wesley and Donald Stratton of Hamilton.


Stratton, Philo

Clinton - Dec. 3 - Philo Stratton, for many years a resident of this village, died this morning, aged 62 years. For several years previous to the installing of the electric light plant at factory village, Mr. Stratton had charge of all the real estate of Victor, Achilles & Co. of New York, the former owners and operators of the Hamilton Knitting Mills. The deceased leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs. George Adams, and three sons, William, Joseph and David.


Stratton, William W.

William W. Stratton, 88, a retired Spargo Wire Co. employee, died this morning at the home of a niece, Mrs. George Kessler, 721 Croton St., after a year's illness. He was born Jan. 1, 1872, in Taberg, son of Philos and Nancy Crossman Stratton and was educated in Taberg schools. Mr. Stratton was twice married. His first wife, the former Rose Kahler, whom he married in 1889, in Rome, died in 1907. On Sept. 20, 1928, he married the former Bertha Schilling. She died Feb. 22, 1945. Mr. Stratton was of the Methodist faith. He came to Rome around the turn of the century and first worked at the Thron Ice Co., and later at the Spargo Wire Co., retiring in 1956. Besides Mrs. Kessler he leaves two nephews, Wesley Stratton, Clinton, and Donald Stratton, Rome. The funeral service will be at 2 pm Saturday at the Kessler home, 721 Croton Street, with the Rev. L. Alden Smith, pastor, Calvary Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kessler home at their convenience.


Stratton, William Wesley

Clinton - William (Wess) Stratton, 72, who for many years worked for the Town of Kirkland Highway Department, died at home in Largo, Fla. Thursday, Oct. 15, 1981. He lived at 32 Eldorado Village, 2450 East Bay Drive.

Mr. Stratton was born on Aug. 5, 1909, son of Julius and Carrie Reil Stratton. They moved to Clinton when Mr. Stratton was young, and he was educated in Clinton schools. On Aug. 31, 1935, Mr. Stratton married Anna Cooley, who died Dec. 9, 1957.

In 1959, Mr. Stratton married Kessie Owens Suppe in Clinton, where the couple lived until his 1971 retirement.

A Protestant, Mr. Stratton worked for a few years for Utica Transit Co. He was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union and a past member of Clinton Fire Department.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Annette) Foley of Clinton, a brother Donald Stratton of Rome, three grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 am at Owens Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery.
