Darling, Clinton W.

Point Rock - Clinton W. Darling 65, native of Swancott Mills, and former resident of Rome, died in Rome Hospital Thursday. He was born Aug. 17, 1892, at Swancott Mills, a son of G. Clinton and Sarah Webb Darling. He attended Swancott Mills school. On Jan. 1, 1913 he married Ellen R. Pritchard who died Dec. 1, 1930. On June 27, 1928 (1938) he married Rose Smith in Camden. They lived in Rome and later bought the Louis Henry farm at Point Rock where they have since lived. During World War II he was employed by Revere Copper & Brass in Rome and operated the farm. Besides his wife he leaves a son, Donald C. Darling, Rome, a step-daughter, Barbara R. Burth, Rome, a brother Ferdinand Darling, Williamstown, three grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Monday. Interment in Point Rock.


Darling, Cornelius

Utica - Cornelius Darling of 292 Brinckerhoff avenue died on Saturday morning at his home, after an illness of three years duration. He was born in Lee, this county, 60 years ago and during the past 25 years had made Utica his home. He was a carpenter and contractor until his illness caused him to retire. He attended the Baptist Church and was respected by all who knew him. Besides his wife he leaves one daughter, Miss Beulah Darling, and his mother, Mrs. Catherine Williams of Utica, and four brothers, Clinton, John and Squire of Lewis county, Frederick of Utica and Charles Darling of Whitesboro.

Darling, Ellen R. Pritchard

Point Rock - Ellen R. Pritchard, wife of Clinton W. Darling, passed away at a Utica hospital Monday after a long illness. She had been in failing health since early last spring. She was a woman highly esteemed by all who knew her and sympathy is extended to the bereaved family. Mrs. Darling was born in Lee Center October 6, 1890, daughter of C. Enoch Prichard and the late Mary Streun Pritchard. She was united in marriage with Clinton W. Darling January 1, 1913 at Rome. For several years they lived in Westmoreland, eight years ago purchasing the Lewis Henry place in Point Rock, where they have since resided. Mrs. Darling attended the Point Rock M. E. Church. Surviving beside her husband and father are one son, Donald C., four sisters, Mrs. John Greindl, Mrs. Henry Smith, Point Rock, Mrs. Roland Wood, Taberg, and Mrs. John CasBaker, Rome, one brother, Richard Pritchard, Point Rock, Funeral will be Thursday. Interment in Point Rock Cemetery.


Darling, Frederick H.

Fred H. Darling, 91, former clockmaker, died yesterday in a Utica Hospital after a short illness. He had resided at 1635 Sunset St., Utica.

Mr. Darling was born in Lee Center, Aug. 22, 1859, and had lived in Utica for 65 years. He was employed by the Kellogg Lumber Co., the Williams and Morgan Furniture Co., and the Gibson Lumber Co., until his retirement about 20 years ago. He had been a carpenter and cabinetmaker.

Up to five years ago he had continued to work as a clockmaker in his home. He was best known for making grandfather clocks and his repairing skills.

Mr. Darling married Jane McGrath in St. Patricks Church, Utica, October 23, 1889. She died December 13, 1939. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. George Illingworth and Mrs. William Lynch, Utica, and Sister Mary Winefried, Durango, Colorado, and two sons, Gerald E. Darling, Utica and Raymond Darling, Stuart, Florida, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.


Darling, George Clinton

West Leyden - This whole community was shocked and saddened when it was learned that George C. Darling had passed away very suddenly at his home near Swancott's Mills this morning at 3:30. Mr. Darling had not been in the best of health for some time but his condition was not regarded as serious, and he had been doing his work about the farm as usual. The day before he had been at work in the hayfield and retired that evening in his usual health. About 3:30 in the morning Mrs. Darling was aroused and noticed that her husband was ill. He gasped and passed away immediatley.

George C. Darling was born Sept. 23, 1853, in the town of Lee. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Sarah Webb who died in March, 1900. Fifteen years ago he was united in marriage with Mrs. Frances Abbott, who survives. Mr. Darling was a life long resident of the town of Lewis and was held in the highest respect. He was strictly honest in his business affairs. His manly integrity and genial pleasing manner made him many friends and he will be long held in remembrance. Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. George Hitchcock of Rome, Mrs. Edward Parsons and Mrs. Louis Parson of West Leyden, two sons, Ferdinand of Buffalo and Clinton of Bartlett, one step-daughter, Mrs. Charles Fox of Lee Center, three stepsons, Fred Watkins of Vernon, William Abbott of Rome and Henry Abbott, West Leyden; four brothers, Squire Darling of Osceola, Charles of Whitesboro, Fred of Utica and John of Lee Center. There also are 24 grandchildren. One son, Edward, was accidently killed last August near Glenfield, NY while on his way to Lowville to be examined for the first draft.


Darling, Gordon G.

Gordon Darling, 68, of 112 W. Dominick St., died yesterday in the Syracuse Veterans Hospital after a long illness. He was born on May 31, 1887, in the Town of Delta, son of John and Carrie Orcutt Darling. A bachelor, Mr. Darling worked as a machine operator at the former Rome Wire Co. He was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are a brother, Herbert Darling, Herkimer, and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Maine, Richfield Springs, and Mrs. Sylvester Robellard, Jensen Beach, Fla. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 at the Griffin & Aldridge Funeral Home.


Darling, John B.

John B. Darling Called by Death
Lee Center, March 22 - John B. Darling, 72, of Wilkinson Settlement, died Wednesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sylvester Robellard of Yorkville. His death followed an illness of four weeks. Mr. Darling was born on August 2, 1861, the son of George and Catherine Darling. On February 29, 1882 he married Carrie Aucuth, who died 24 years ago. Mr. Darling conducted a farm at Wilkinson Settlement for eight years. Prior to that he lived at Point Rock. Surviving besides his daughter at Yorkville, are two other daughters, Mrs. Ethel Rosen of Rome, and Mrs. Laura Main of Clayville; two sons, Gordon of Rome and Herbert of Clayville; a brother Fred of Utica and four grandchildren.


Darling, Marandie

Mrs. Marandie Darling, wife of Squire Darling, died at her home at Swancott's Mills on Monday, Nov. 21, at the age of 72 years. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mrs. Babcock and Mrs. Durgey of Williamstown. The funeral was held on Thursday at 10 o'clock am. Father Kenney of Mohawk Hill officated. The remains were taken to Williamstown by Undertaker Trainor for interment.

Darling, Squire

Bursting of an inflated inner tube of an automobile tire used as a means of support while swimming caused the drowning of Squire Darling, 23, of 110 Spring Street, yesterday afternoon at the swimming hole near the bridge in Stanwix. Mr. Darling had been in the water for about half an hour and as he could not swim he was using an inflated inner tube for support. The tube was small and he changed to a larger one and as he was near the middle of the pool it burst and he sank. Two friends went to his aid, but they could not catch hold of him. The two men, Clinton Nash and Edward Webb, Rome, then called for help and the Rome police were notified. Chief of Police Owens and Officers Engelbrecht, Shanley, Harrison and Skibitski responded with grappling hooks and the body was recovered. Emilio Spadafora, scoutmaster of the East Rome Troop of Boy Scouts, applied the Shafer method of resuscitation, but to no avail. Dr. Gordon Holden, coroner, Utica, was called in the absence of Dr. H. F. Hubbard, Rome Coroner. Squire Darling was born near Glenmore, town of Annsville, 23 years ago, a son of John B. and the late Carrie Aucutt Darling. He was educated in District School No. 14, and came to the city four years ago. He was employed in the plant of the Rome Brass and Coppy Company. Suviving besides his father are two brothers and three sisters, Gordon Darling of this city, Herbert L. of Utica, Mrs. Edward Maine, Cassbville, Mrs. Sylvester Robillard, New York Mills, and Miss Ethel Darling, Clayville. Dingman, Charles E.

Alexandria Bay, Aug. 4. -- Charles E. Dingman, 64, fishing guide, boatman and former island caretaker, dropped dead at his home on Anthony street this morning at 8:45 following a heart attack.

He had been active guiding fishermen this summer although he had suffered two previous heart attacks. He did not have a guiding job this morning, and had gone out to sit on his porch. His wife, Mrs. Mayme Dingman, heard a noise on the porch and went out to find her husband had collapsed. Dr. Robert B. Burtch was called and pronounced Mr. Dingman dead.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Giltz funeral home here, with Rev. Henry O. Hospers, pastor of the Reformed Church of the Thousand Islands, officiating. Burial will be in Barnes Setttlement cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mayme Plimpton Dingman; two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen D. Hampson, of Adams, and Miss Florence Dingman of Canton; and two brothers, John and Orville, both of Alexandria Bay.

Mr. Dingman was born at Alexandria Bay Nov. 13, 1894, son of Edward and Nellie Beebe (sic) Dingman. He attended schools here and had always lived at Alexandria Bay. He married Miss Mayme Plimpton of Alexandria Bay in October, 1923, in the Methodist parsonage at Theresa. Rev. Albert E. Budd performed the ceremony.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the John D. Lyman post of the American Legion. For years he was caretaker at Cherry island where the Dawes family lived. The property presently is owned by Abe Cooper of Watertown.


Dingman, Charles W.

Charles William Dingman, 414 N. George Street, highly esteemed resident of this city, passed away about 1 o'clock Monday evening in Boston, Mass. Mr. Dingman was born Sept. 4, 1854, in Stokes, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Dingman. He spent his early life in Rome and in 1879 went to Chicago, Ill., where he resided until a few years ago. He was associated with Armour & Co. in Chicago and was one of the organizers of the Armour Grain Company. Until his retirement in 1920 he was secretary and treasurer as well as a director of this company. He was a director of the National Guaranty Fire Insurance Company of Newark, NJ. He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, of Rome. Mr. Dingman was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Frances Sautter of Chicago who survives. He also leaves one daughter, Edna D. Bacon, wife of Harlow E. Bacon, and one sister, Mrs. Adele F. Young all of this city.


Dingman, Clarence Otis

Roman Dies In His Home At Age of 83
Clarence O. Dingman, 405 N. Madison St., died at his home yesterday afternoon after having been in failing health for several years. He was born in Lee Center on March 19, 1879, son of Cornelius and Lucinda Spencer Dingman. He was educated in the Lee Center school. He was married to Pearl E. Shaver in Utica on Sept. 2, 1907 by Rev. Dana Bigelow, minister of the Westminister Presbyterian Church. He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. In July of 1953 he retired as a machinist from the Revere where he had been employed for 37 yrs. He was a member of Rome Lodge IOOF. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Harmon D. (Marion) Smith Sr., Rome, one son Henry S. Dingman, Rome, and four grandchildren, Kathleen, Ann, William and Carey Smith. Funeral will be held at the Teller Funeral Home on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Charles LePorte associate minister of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 and on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.


Dingman, Cornelius

Lee Center Notes: There will be less surprise than pain at the announcement of the death of Cornelius Dingman Sr., of this place who died last Wednesday at the advanced age of 74 yrs. Funeral was held at the Church. Rev. Mr. Fisk preached the sermon.

Dingman, Edwin

Lee Center - In a smashup on the central road at Bergen's grade, east Batavia, Tuesday evening, caused by a broken wheel, fifteen cars were wrecked. Edward Dingman, a brakeman of DeWitt, son of George Dingman, formerly of Stokes, was killed. He was 34 years old. The funeral occurs today at 10 am.


Dingman, Eliza Perry

Mrs. Eliza Dingman died at Dewitt, Saturday, Aged 47. The funeral services were held at her late residence at 9 am Monday. The interment took place at the Lee Corners cemetery at 1:30 pm yesterday. Deceased was a former resident of Lee, and was well known in this vicinity.

Alexandria Bay - March 9 - Jared Dingman, an old and respected citizen of this place, died at his home near this village Friday, aged 84 years. Mr. Dingman was born at Lee Center, Oneida county, December 22, 1821, and moved to this place 56 years ago and made his home here on his farm after that time. He was made a master mason in Alexandria lodge, No. 297, F.&A.M., 39 years ago and took great interest in the lodge. He leaves the following children; John and Miss Kate Dingman of Alexandria Bay, Jason Dingman and Mrs. William Root of Theresa and Elsie Barnes of Sodus.

Stokes - William Dingman of Stokes has received news of the sudden death of his brother, Jared Dingman, at his home near Alexandria Bay, Jefferson county, NY, in his 84th year. He had been in his usual health up to the time of his death. He was born in the town of Lee near Stokes, where he spent his younger days. Mr. Dingman was an honest, upright citizen and was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact. He had a fine farm on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. He was a carpenter by trade and had built many houses on the numerous islands in the river. He leaves to mourn their loss six children, four brothers and four sisters; William H. Dingman of Stokes, Catherine Darling of Utica, Cornelius and George of Lee Center, John of Owasso, Michigan, Elizabeth of Theresa, New York, and Frances Brodock of Syracuse.


Dingman, Jason

Theresa, Dec. 2 - Jason H. Dingman, 82, a farmer of Theresa, Route 2, died at 8:55 this morning in the House of Good Samaritan, Watertown, where he had been a patient since Monday. He underwent an abdominal operation Wednesday. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Dingman was active and worked on his farm, located on the Theresa-Redwood Road about two mile and a half north of this village, until recently. About three weeks ago he was plowing a field on his farm.

He was born at Dingman Point, named for the Dingman family, December 24, 1855. He had resided on the Dingman farm on the Theresa-Redwood road for more than a half century.

Mr. Dingman was related to Jerry Dingman who came from Oneida County a century or more ago and settled on the banks of the St. Lawrence river below Alexandria Bay. A carpenter by trade, Jerry Dingman built several houses in the vicinity of Alexandria Bay.

In 1880, Mr. Dingman married Ida Sheldon and four years later he purchased the Suits farm on the Redwood road, where he had since resided. His first wife died in 1928 and later he married Lucena Ebert of East Rochester.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are three sons, George, who resides on the Dingman farm, Vincent of Theresa and Clarence of Alexandria Bay. Another son, Eugene, was killed by a train at a railroad crossing near Philadelphia several years ago.

Mr. Dingman was a member of the Plessis grange.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 pm at the Giltz Funeral Home here. Burial will be made in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery.


Dingman, Jenette Stedman

Stokes, Aug.12 - Mrs. Wm. Dingman died of cancer at her home near the Sand Flats cemetery in this town yesterday afternoon, aged 62 years. She was an old resident and had a wide circle of friends. Besides her husband three children survive: Mrs. Emmett A. Young, of Rome, Charles Dingman of Chicago, and Mrs. Elizabeth Stedman of Clockville, Madison county.


Dingman, John Edward

Alexandria Bay, Oct. 17 -- John Edward Dingman, 85, lifelong resident of this village died this morning at 3 at the Ivey Nursing Home where he had been a patient for four years.

Mr. Dingman who was widely known here and for years as a fishing guide had been employed by many prominent visitors, had been in poor health for some time. He was known here familiarly as "Punkin" Dingman.

The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at 2 at the Giltz Funeral Home here. Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery.

Surviving are three sons, John, Orvie B. and Charles Dingman of this village; two daughters, Katherine Hampson, Adams Center; Miss Florence Dingman, a school teacher at Canton. Three sisters, Mrs. George Pledger, Mrs. Myrtle Henning, Seattle, Wash; Mrs. Mary Smythe, Beacon.

Mr. Dingman was born at the Dingman family homestead on Holland St. here on February 2, 1872, son of the late John and Jane Porter Dingman.

He spent his entire life at Alexandria Bay and lived at the Holland St. home.

In the early 1900's he was caretaker of Twin Cottages on Cherry Island near here which were owned by the operators of the Abraham & Strauss Dept. Store in New York City.

For 50 years, Mr. Dingman served as a fishing guide in the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region. On July 26, 1890, he married Miss Nellie Beebee of Alexandria Bay. She died at the Ivey Nursing Home on December 6, 1956.

REDWOOD -- Orvie B. Dingman, 52, Main Street, was dead on arrival at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, at 9:45 p.m. Sunday. He had not been in ill health.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 .m. in the Giltz Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay, Rev. Richmond Hutchins, rector, St. Lawrence Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Ingham Cemetery, Brier Hill.

Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marguerite MacAllister Dingman and two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen D. Hampson, Adams Center, and Miss Florence E. Dingman, Canton and Alexandria Bay.

Born June 22, 1918, in Alexandria Bay, son of Edwin and Nellie Beebe (sic) Dingman, he was graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and served in the Air Force during World War II. He was employed as a carpenter by Thomson Enterprises and was an antique dealer.

Mr. Dingman, a 32nd degree Mason, was a member of Alexandria Lodge 297, F&AM and was a member of St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.


Dingman, Pearl Etta Shaver

Mrs. Clarence Dingman, 89, of 310 Cottage St., died Wednesday at Rome Hospital after a brief illness. The former Pearl Shaver, she was born on Aug. 24, 1884, in West Branch, daughter of Henry and Rosa Shaver. She was married to Clarence Dingman 65 years ago. He died on July 16, 1963. Mrs. Dingman was a member of the Queen Esther Rebekah Lodge, Holly Chapters, Order of the Eastern Star, and Amaranth. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Marion) Ford, Lee Valley; a son, Henry Dingman, Camden; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday at the Griffin and Aldridge Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Friday at the funeral home.


Dingman, Philena Patterson

DEATHS: Dingman - In Lee, January 21st., 1864, of bilious fever after an illness of about 3 weeks, which she bore with christian fortitude and uncomplaining patience, Mrs. Philena, wife of Cornelius Dingman, aged 61 years and 21 days. Mrs. Dingman leaves a large family and an extensive circle of friends.


Dingman, Sarah Dingman

Death of a former resident of Lee.
Mrs. Jared Dingman died at her home in Alexandria Bay, Dec. 26, in her 70th year. Her maiden name was Sarah Dingman. Many years ago she resided in the town of Lee. Her husband is a brother of Cornelius and Wm. H. Dingman of that town and formerly lived there. For over 40 years he has lived at Alexandria Bay. The burial of Mrs. D. took place at Alexandria Bay.


Dingman, Sarah Roberts Barnard

A double death from pneumonia occurred yesterday at the residence of G. W. Bork. Mrs. Sarah A. Dingman, mother of Mrs. Bork, died at 1:30 pm. Jacob Bork, father of Mr. Bork, died at 7:45 pm. Both were old residents of the locality and well known. Mrs. Dingman was the daughter of Julius Roberts who owned a farm in Blossvale. Her first husband was Benjamin Barnard of Lee. Her second husband was Cornelius Dingman. She was a skillful and faithful nurse. Only surviving child is Mrs. Bork.

Dingman, Susan Annis

Susie A., daughter of Cornelius Dingman, of this place, died suddenly on Friday last after one day of sickness. Although not yet four years of age, she had made herself a universal favorite by her bright and winning ways. The funeral services were held at the Union Church on Sunday forenoon. Rev. Mr. Stanton, of this place, delivered an eloquent discourse on the occasion.


Dingman, William H.

At the home of his daughter, Mrs. George A. Stedman, Verona, at 2:30 o'clock this (Tuesday) morning occurred the death of William H. Dingman, one of the oldest and best known residents of the town of Lee, where he had lived and where he was one of the prosperous and successful farmers. He had been staying at the home of his daughter for some weeks and was taken with a severe cold about a week ago which developed into pneumonia. He was confined to his bed but a few days. Mr. Dingman was born in the town of Lee June 29, 1826, the son of Cornelius and Philema Dingman. For 29 years he was the sexton of the Evergreen at Stokes, across from the entrance of which he lived. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Emmett A. Young, 316 W. Embargo Street, this city, Mrs. George A. Stedman of Verona, and C. W. Dingman of Chicago. The funeral will be held at Stokes tomorrow morning and interment will be made in the cemetery.

ALEXANDRIA BAY -- Mrs. Winona M. Ackley Dingman, 60, of 95 Walton street, an antique dealer and wife of Orvie E. Dingman, died early this morning in the Edward John Noble hospital, where she had been a patient since Monday. She had been ill for some time.

The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Giltz funeral home with Rev. Adrian C. Gray, pastor of the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles, officiating. Burial will be in Ingham Cemetery, Brier Hill.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Donna) Goodman, Mohawk; a son, Vernon, Texas; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Stella Hutton and Mrs. Clarine Kelly, both of Alexandria Bay, and Mrs. Paul (Alice) Doak, Eaton Rapids, Mich., and two brothers, Ivan C. Ackley, West Island, L. I., and Keith J. Ackley, Birmingham, Mich.

Mrs. Dingman was born in Alexandria Bay, Nov. 16, 1906, a daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth Johnston Ackley. She was graduated from Alexandria Bay High school and was married to Orvie Dingman May 26, 1943, in Richmond, Va. Since their marriage the couple had lived in Alexandria Bay and operated a dealership in antiques.
