Houser, August

West Branch - August Houser, 95, a native of this place, died yesterday in the Evergreen Nursing Home, Camden. He had been seriously ill for the past month. The son of Jerry and Katherine Burch Houser, he was born Oct. 5, 1866 and was educated in the West Branch school. He had been engaged in building and carpentry work most of his life, building many places in West Branch and surrounding area. Mr. Houser was also an accomplished musician and for many years was a member of the old West Branch Band which played at numerous functions throughout the county. He also was a member of Friends Church here. For the past 18 years Mr. Houser had resided most of the time in Verona. He was the last of a family of eight children. He never married. Several nieces and nephews survive. The funeral will be held at 2 pm Thursday at the Waldo Wiggins Prince Home for Funerals, Rome, with the Rev. Augustus Benedict, former pastor of the Friends Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 and on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.

Chester L. Houser, 67, of Route 365, Verona, died early Friday morning at his residence, following a lengthy illness. Born in Rome, on April 11, 1925, he was the son of Frank and Ethel Brown Houser. A resident of Verona for the past thirty-three years, Mr. Houser was raised as a youth in West Branch and was a graduate of the West Leyden High School. He married Stephanie Perry in St.John's Rectory on September 13, 1947. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Houser was employed by the New York State Thruway Authority. An avid outdoors sportsman, he was a member of the Copper Creek Association in Lyonsdale, the National Rifle Association, and the Oneida Fish and Game Club. Mr. Houser was of the Methodist faith and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Coast Guard aboard the USS Sheliac in the Pacific Theatre. Surviving besides his wife, Stephanie, are one son, Robert D. Houser of Verona, one daughter, Mrs. Aaron (Barbara) Pugh of Vernon, six sisters, Mrs. Erwin (Romona) Jones of Verona, Mrs. Harold (Audrey) Graham of Palm Bay, Florida, Mrs. Aaron (Leah) Beyel of West Leyden, Mrs. Patrick (Mary) Moshetti of Oneida, Mrs. William (Martha) Grogan of Rome, and Mrs. Jack (Katherine) Clanton of Oneida; two grandchildren, Brett and Brittany Pugh, and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ronald Edick of Oneida Castle, and a special niece, Joanne Rossi of Verona.

Earl L. Houser, 65, a 41 yr resident of East Detroit, died Monday at St. John Hospital, Detroit. Mr. Houser was a milkman and a member of Advent Lutheran Church, East Detroit. He is survived by his wife, Ruby, daughters Nancy DiNoble of California, Linda Sjolund of Williamstown, Amy Baker of Roseville, sons Daniel of Warren, Jeffrey of Lapeer, brother Grover, sister Lucy Roberts, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 am Thursday at Advent Lutheran Church, 21439 Kelly Road, East Detroit. Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial Gardens East, Clinton Township.

Mortuary - Edward Daniel Houser, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Odis Houser, died at 6:55 o'clock Saturday evening of pneumonia at the family home, 51 West Genesee Avenue. The body will be taken to Ypsilanti for burial.


Houser, Eleanor Brodock

Mrs. Milton S. Houser, 50, of 1700 N. George Street, died Tuesday in the Upstate Medical enter in Syracuse where she had been a patient for the past week.

The former Eleanor Brodock, she was born in Rome May 14, 1919, daughter of George and Alice Zingerline Brodock. She was graduated from Rome Free Academy in the class of 1936. A life resident of Rome, Mrs. Houser was employed as office manager for several construction companies and had been relaction director of the Rome Urban Renewal Agency before her illness.

She was an active member and past officer of the Rome Art Association, member of the Rome Historical Society, a volunteer at the Fort Stanwix Museum, and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She and Mr. Houser were married Oct. 4, 1941, in St. John's Lutheran Church by Rev. Paul Gassman and the Rev. Ernest Heur.

Surviving with her husband and father are three brothers, William G. Brodock, Old Forge, Glenn A. Brodock and Gerald C. Brodock, both of Rome, and several nieces and newphews.


Houser, Ellison

West Branch - Ellison L. Houser, 74, Houser Road, a dairy farmer for many years, died Monday afternoon at his home. He had been ill for the past two years. Born Aug. 5, 1903, in West Branch, he was the son of Jeremiah and Emma Dorn Houser. He attended school in West Branch, where he married Esther R. Benedict on April 15, 1945, at the Friends Meeting House. Mr. Houser had been Town of Lee justice of the peace, welfare officer and assessor. He had also been school attendance officer. He was a member of the Friends Meeting House, where he served as clerk of the monthly meetings for many years, and a 59 year member of the West Branch Grange. He is survived by his wife. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 am at the Trainor Funeral Home, Boonville. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 pm Wednesday, and for an hour before funeral services. Donations may be made to Children's Hospital and Rehabilitation Center of Utica, or the Adirondack Health Building, Boonville.


Houser, Emma Dorn

West Branch - Mrs. Emma Dorn Houser, 77, widow of Jerry Houser, died Thursday at her home here after an illness since Saturday. She was born in Constableville, April 16, 1868, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dorn. She taught school for several years and on Nov. 4, 1892 in West Branch she was married to Mr. Houser by the Rev. Ellison Purdy. The couple lived at North Western for six years and had since lived here. Mr. Houser died in 1927. Mrs. Houser was a member of Friends Church and West Branch Grange. She leaves a son, Ellison L. Houser, West Branch. A daughter, Vera, died in 1918. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at her late home with the Rev. August Benedict officiating. Interment in Evergreen.


Houser, Ethel Brown

Mrs. Ethel L. Houser, 95, formerly of 417 W. Elm St., Oneida, died Sunday, May 26, 1985, in Stonehedge Nursing Home, where she had been a patient the past five years. Born at West Branch on Aug. 4, 1889, she was a daughter of Marshall and Mary Snyder Brown. She married Frank Houser on Nov. 1, 1913. He died in March 1967. A resident of Oneida for 36 years, Mrs.Houser was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses. Surviving are a son, Chester Houser, Verona, six daughters, Romona Jones, Verona, Mrs. Harold (Audrey) Graham, Florida, Mrs. Aaron (Leah) Beyel, West Leyden, Mrs. Patrick (Mary) Moshetti, Sherrill, Mrs. William (Martha) Grogan, Rome, and Mrs. John (Katherine) Clanton, Oneida, a sister, Mrs. Jess Murphy, Rome, 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday at the convenience of the family at the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes.

West Branch George Houser, 80, Dies At His Home West Branch, Jan. 7 - George Houser, 80, well known lumberman and saw mill operator, long a resident of West Branch, died at his home here Sunday morning. He was born in Hawkinsville, September 23, 1854, son of Jeremiah and Katherine Houser and came to West Branch with his parents when quite young. He spent 20 years in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he was engaged in the lumber and saw mill business. On his return east he came to his old home in West Branch and continued his home here. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Julia Howe, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Worden of West Branch and Mrs. Albert Meyers of Stanwix; three sons, Grover and Vernon of Rochester and Denzil Houser of Texas; and 18 grandchildren. There are two sisters, Mrs. Rose Shaver of Rome, and Mrs. Margaret Durr of Whitesboro; three brothers, William of Rome, Augusta and Carl Houser of West Branch. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon at his late home and at 1 pm at Friends Church.

Funeral from the home Friday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Penfield.


Houser, Jeremiah Jr.

West Branch - Jerry Houser, a well known and highly respected resident of this place, passed away Wednesday evening at 7:40 o'clock. On Saturday he suffered a stroke and gradually failed until the end. Mr. Houser was born in West Branch March 10, 1862, son of the late Jerry and Katherine Houser. On Nov. 4, 1892, he was married to Emma Dorn of Constableville, who survives. With the exception of five years when he lived in North Western, his entire life had been spent in this place. For fifteen years he ran a saw mill. He was postmaster for four years. Seventeen years ago he bought the farm on which he died. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Ellison and the following sisters and brothers; Mrs. Rosa Shaver of Rome, Mrs. Joseph Durr and William Houser of Utica, George, John, Augustus and Carl of this place. He was a member of West Branch Grange and attended the Friends Church. He was a kind neighbor and will be sadly missed.

John Houser, Veteran Stage Driver, Passes Away at West Branch -- Death Takes Picturesque Figure Who For 50 Years Delivered Mail Between West Branch and Rome, Retired From Active Service Two Years Ago. John Houser, a life long and highly esteemed resident of West Branch, and for 50 years a stage driver between the local post office and West Leyden, died this morning at 12:10 o'clock at his home in West Branch. Born in West Branch in 1858. Mr. Houser was born in West Branch on April 13, 1858, son of the late Mr and Mrs Jerry Houser. For a time he conducted the hotel at West Branch and later purchased a 300 acre farm there. Years ago he covered the mail route between Rome and Constableville, a distance of 36 miles, for which he received $500 a year. He would travel 18 miles of the distance himself, hiring a helper to drive the remainder of the distance. When he took over the Rome - West Leyden stage route, he received $2,000 a year. His son, Frank assisted him on the route, driving an automobile which was used in the summer. Every winter, Mr. Houser would go back to the horses, handling the reins during the most of the winter himself. He carried freight, express passengers and mail. Started Driving at 18 - Mr. Houser started driving stage when but a boy of 18 years. He relinquished the stage route contract a little more than two years ago and has since been living a somewhat retired life in West Branch. He was married in West Branch to Miss Mary Rasha of Rome who survives with his son, Frank, now of Lee Center. Mr Houser also leaves four brothers, George, Gustie, and Carl of West Branch and William Houser of this city, two sisters, Mrs Joseph Durr of Utica and Mrs Rosie Shaver of Rome, and five grandchildren.

West Branch - Much Sympathy is extended to the Houser family in the death of John Houser who passed away Wednesday.


Houser, Julia Howe

Mrs. Julia Houser, 78, West Branch, and LeRoy E. Fake, 55, Ilion, were killed in automobile accidents yesterday. Mrs. Houser was killed when she was struck by an automobile operated by John H. Baker, 24, Montreal, Hamilton College student, as she was walking home. She was the mother-in-law of Chester Worden, West Branch, former Roman. Mrs. Houser was returning home after visiting her daughter when the accident occurred. Undersheriff Fred L. Meiss and Deputy Sheriff Charles T. Williams were told by Baker that Mrs. Houser appeared to have started across the road as his car approached. She had been walking on the same side of the road as his car was traveling, he said. Mrs. Worden confirmed this, according to the investigators. Coroner Thomas A. Cox was called. Death was caused by shock and hemorrhage. Baker was not held. His car, after striking the woman, skidded off the road and hit a fence. He was not hurt. Mrs. Houser was born in Parishville, St. Lawrence County, April 15, 1863, a daughter of Seymour and Elizabeth Illes Howe. Her marriage to Mr. Houser took place at Boyne Falls, Mich. Jan. 12, 1882. She had gone with her parents to Michigan at an early age. Mr. & Mrs. Houser came to West Branch in 1901 and Mr. Houser died Jan. 6, 1935. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Worden, West Branch,and Mrs. Albert Myers, Verona, three sons, Denzel, Indianapolis, Grover, East Rochester, and Verne, Dolgeville, two brothers, Elmer Howe, Vicksburg, Mich. and Robert Howe, Detroit, and 28 grandchildren. The body was removed to the Worden home where friends may call at their convenience.


Houser, Leo Vernon (Sr.)

West Branch - Leo V. Houser, 76, a former resident of this place, died Friday night in the Little Falls Hospital. He resided at Dolgeville RD 1.

He was born in Boyne Falls, Mich., Jan. 12, 1891, the son of George and Julie Howe Houser, and came to West Branch with his parents in 1901 and spent his boyhood here.

He later moved to Rochester where in 1914 he married the former Louise Gartz. She passed away in 1945.

Mr. Houser went to Dolgeville in 1935 where he was employed as manager of the United Shoe Machine Corp. until his retirement.

He was a member of Dolgeville Lodge, F & AM, and served as master in 1941, as High Priest of Oriental Chapter, RAM in 1944 and 1945, and as assistant grand lecturer of Royal Arch Masons from 1946-1948.

Mr. Houser is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Julian Evans, Dolgeville, and Mrs. Richard Clemons and Mrs. Francis Balderson, both of Salisbury Center, five sons, Leo Jr., Rochester, Clarence and Ralph, Dolgeville, Richard, Frankfort, and Winfred, San Francisco, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Belle Myers, Verona, and Mrs. Chester Worden Sr., West Branch., and one brother, Denzel Houser, Indianapolis, Ind.

Interment in Dolgeville Cemetery.

Houser, Leo V. - died May 10, 1991. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Mary, Dennis, Terry and Jane Houser, brother Richard, Clarence and Winnie Houser, sisters Beatrice Clemons, Marilyn Balderson, 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, many nieces, nephews. He was a retiree of Reque Electric.

Interment in Parma Union Cemetery


Houser, Mary Rasha

West Branch - Mary Rasha, widow of the late John Houser, well known mail carrier, passed away at the home of her son Frank in this place, last evening at 6:15 o'clock. She had been ill one week. Mrs. Houser was born July 24, 1859, daughter of the late Frank and Caroline Rasha. She was united in marriage Sep. 25, 1882 with John Houser, who died in 1929. She always resided in West Branch. Surviving besides the son at whose home she died are four brothers, Amos and Fred C. Rasha of Rome, Frank and Edward Rasha of Lee Center, also seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.


Houser, Mildred Wyman

Mrs. Mildred W. Houser, 95, formerly of Colonial Apartments, a retired employee of the New York State School for the Deaf, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1987, in Rome Nursing Home after a long illness. Born on June 28, 1892, in West Branch, she was a daughter of George and Jennie Thomas Wyman. She graduated from Oakwood Seminary in Richfield Springs. In 1913 she married Spencer F. Houser. Mr. Houser died in 1927. Mrs. Houser was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ava Dorfman Senior Citizens, and the American Association of Retired People. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Gloria) Graham, and two sons, Milton S. Houser and Dr. William W. Houser, all of Rome; two half-brothers, George Wyman, Lee Center, and Benjamin Wyman, California; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Mrs. Houser was predeceased by two children, a daughter, Mrs. Martha Stropp in 1971, and a son, Paul F. Houser in 1986.


Houser, Vera

Miss Vera Houser, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Houser of West Branch, died at the Rome Infirmary at 10:15 am today from pneumonia following influenza. She had been confined to her bed about a week. This fall she entered the nurses training class at the infirmary and had proved very efficient. Her death will bring sorrow to many friends.

Ronnie Houser, Salisbury, with the US Air Force, Mrs. Richard ( Deborah) Nichols, Salisbury, brother of Leo Houser, Rochester, Clarence Houser, Dolgeville, Richard Houser, Florida, Winifred Houser, California, Mrs. Richard (Bernice) Clemons, Florida, Mrs. Marilyn Balderston, Litte Falls, grandfather of Scott and Jason Nichols, Salisbury, Stacey and Kelly Houser, Tucson, Arizona, predeceased by a brother Elmer Houser in April 1967, and a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Evans, in Sep. 1983

Burial in the spring in Salisbury Rural Cemetery.

William F. Houser, 82, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Reta C. Airllo, 410 N. George St. he had been an interior deorator in Utica for 60 years.

A son of Jeremiah and Catherine Butch Houser, he was born in West Branch, June 11, 1864. He was married to the former Lila C. Gates of Utica.

Seven years ago he retired from his interior decorating business and moved to this city to make his home with Mrs. Aiello. He had been in failing health during all of that period, and had been confined to his bed for the past 3-1/2 years. He was a communicant of Grace Church, Utica.
