Tanner, Alfred

Camden - Alfred E. Tanner, native of Annsville, where he was born March 20, 1862, died last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur E. Crossman, Oak Street, Rome, after an illness of two years. Mr. Tanner was a son of the late John Tanner and Betsy Daniels Tanner. February 19, 1889 he married Miss Emogene Passinger of Camden, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. C. H. Guile at that time pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Thirty years ago Mr. & Mrs. Tanner moved to Rome, where he had since made his home, except for a time when they resided at Handy's corners. Besides his wife and daughter he leaves two grandchildren, Albert and Margaret Crossman of Rome, a sister, Adella Miller of Camden, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Funeral Home of B.A. Sanborn.


Tanner, Chester

Westernville - Chester A. Tanner, 84, of Westernville, a retired dairy farmer, died Monday in Veterans Hospital, Syracuse, after a brief illness. Mr. Tanner was born on Feb. 19, 1890, in the Town of Annsville, son of John and Flora Rosa Tanner. He attended Annsville public schools. He served with the American Expeditionary force in World War I in the European Theater. He married the former Lena Gregory on July 23, 1921 in Osceola. Mr.Tanner lived in Osceola for 38 years, moving to Westernville in 1959. He leaves two sons, Lloyd Tanner, Phoenix, Ariz., and Leslie Tanner, Westernville, two step-sons, Robert Gregory, Worcester, Mass, and Oren Gregory, New Ipswich, Mass, a step daughter, Margaret Wainwright, Venice, Florida, five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday at the Sanborn Funeral Home, Camden. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Camden.

The death of Mrs. Marie Turner, formerly of this place, occurred in Rome at 9:30 o'clock this morning of the ailments incident to old age. She was 86 years old and all her life had been spent in the town of Camden, where her husband, John Turner, was for many years a practical and well known farmer. He died a number of years ago. She was a woman of lovely Christian character, a veritable mother in Israel and was beloved by all who knew her. Surviving her are two step-sons, John Turner of Camden and Adelbert D. Turner of Rome.


Tanner, Emogene Passenger

Mrs. Emogene Passinger Tanner, 83, who resided with her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Crossman, 805 Oakwood St., died this morning in a Rome Hospital. She has been in ill health for the past 17 years and seriously ill for the past six months. She was born March 9, 1871, in Camden, daughter of John S. and Margaret LaBastion Passinger. She attended the Camden Union School and was a member of the Methodist Church in Camden. On Feb. 19, 1889, she was married to Alfred E. Tanner, in Camden. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. H. Guile. Mr. Tanner died in Rome March 4, 1931. Mrs. Tanner had lived in Rome since June 9, 1901. She was a member of the Calvery Methodist Church and the Woman's Society for Christian Service. Surviving are her daughter with whom she made her home; two grandchildren, Alfred E. Crossman, Rome, and Mrs. Leland W. Last, Westernville; three great grandsons, Roger, Marc and Allen Last, Westernville, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Teller Funeral Home at 2 pm. The Rev. George Dando, pastor of the Calvary Methodists Church, will officiate. Interment will be made in Forest Lawn.

Mrs. John Tanner, 73, dies at daughters home: Camden Oct. 6, 1933 - Mrs. Flora L. Tanner, 73, died Thursday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ervin Sutter, on the Taberg road. Flora L. Tanner was born July 14, 1860, in Blenis Corners, daughter of Moses and Cynthia Ketchum Rosa. On October 25, 1883, she was married to John Tanner, who died eight years ago. She leaves besides Mrs. Sutter, Mrs. Elmer Williams and Leon Tanner, all of Camden; Chester Tanner, Osceola, 12 grandchildren.

John Tanner, a well known and respected resident of the town of Annsville died at his home at 1 pm on Sunday, Dec. 22, after a long illness. Nearly two years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered, and for the last month had failed rapidly. Mr. Tanner was born in Annsville on April 10, 1827, and had always resided in the town. He was kind, unassuming, honest and upright in all his dealings and was respected by all who knew him. He leaves besides his wife, one daughter and two sons, Mrs. William Miller and John Tanner of Annsville, and Alfred E. Tanner of Rome, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Handy of Annsville.

Alfred E. Tanner, 407 Roberts Street, received word on Thursday of the sudden illness of his brother, John Tanner of the town of Annsville, and on arriving there at 6:30 Thursday evening he found that death had come a half hour before. John Tanner was born in Annsville 66 years ago on January 29, 1859, and had always lived in that vicinity. He was married to Miss Flora Rosa on Oct. 25, 1881, by Rev. Elmer Curtiss at Camden. He was a member of the M.E.Church at McConnellsville. Mr. Tanner was engaged in farming. Death came following a shock suffered Wednesday morning. Mr. Tanner leaves his wife, two sons, Chester and Leon, two daughters, Mrs. Elmer D. Williams and Mrs. Ervin Sutter of Camden, a sister, Mrs. William Miller, Camden, and his brother, Alfred E. Tanner, Rome

Camden - Leon W. Tanner, 61, Camden, Taberg Road, died Tuesday night in Rome Hospital. He was born Nov. 14, 1906, in the Town of Annsville, son of John and Flora Rosa Tanner,. He and Ethel Sutter were married Sept. 24, 1930, in Taberg by the Rev. Walter Clement of the Methodist Church. Mr. Tanner was a carpenter and had been employed by General Cable Corp. of Rome, Camden Wire Co., and later by George Monroe, contractor, Camden. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Joyce) Crouch, Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Paul (Jane) Cleveland, Albany, and Miss Darleen Tanner, Syracuse, one granddaughter, Barbara Crouch, Topeka, and a brother, Chester Tanner, Westernville. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 pm from the Sanborn Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Ernest Bittner, pastor of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in McConnellsville Cemetery.


Tanner, Viola Belle

On Wednesday night about 12 o'clock occurred the death of Viola Belle, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Tanner, at the home of her parents just east of this village. She was born Oct. 24, 1892, in the house where her death occurred. Besides her parents two brothers and two sisters survive: Mrs. Elmer D. Williams of Camden, Eva, Chester and Leon Tanner, who live at home.
