George H. Coonrad, 72, Rome business man for 54 years, died at his home, 325 W. Dominick St., shortly after midnight today.
Since 1882, when he opened a store in the Arlington Hotel Block, Mr. Coonrad had dealt in teas and coffee, with crockery and house furnishings as a side line. However for the past 20 yrs he was engaged exclusively in tea and coffee.
Since opening his first store, Mr. Coonrad had conducted stores in several buildings in the first three blocks of W. Dominick St. At present the store is located at 325 W. Dominick St.
Mr. Coonrad was born in Coonrad (now Coonrod) named for his ancestors who first settled in the community on November 1, 1863, and was the son of Lucy A. Wallace and Benjamin F. Coonrad. On November 21, 1888 he married Mary A. Richards, who died November 19, 1911.
Mr. Coonrad had been prominently identified with the Odd Fellows and had held offices in practically all of the subordinate lodges. His affiliations with the organization brought him in contact with lodges throughout the state, as he traveled extensively in behalf of the Odd Fellows.
His survivors include a son, George L., at home, a sister, Mrs. Mary C. Jones, Montclair, NJ, a brother, Benjamin M. Coonrad, this city, a niece, Mrs. Leslie I. Ferguson, Montclair, and a nephew, Raymond B. Jones, also of Montclair.
