Evans, David G.

Rome Sentinel
January 22, 1901

The death of David G. Evans occurred at 9 am today at his home, No. 407 N. Madison Street. Mr. Evans was the son of Mr. & Mrs. William Evans and was born at Pleasant Valley, near Oriskany, on June 21, 1846. He received his education at Whitestown Seminary and the Utica business College and for several years taught school. He held the position of principal of the academy at Belleville, Jefferson Co., for some time, but owing to failing health was obliged to relinquish that work. he returned to the farm near Oriskany and for a time did outdoor work.

In 1863 Mr. Evans purchased a meat market on the site of the present Arlington hotel. in 1873 the firm of William Evans & Sons was formed and the block now occupied by them on N. Washington St. was erected. Eight years ago the deceased assumed the management of the Armour branch office in this city and continued to hold that position till about two years ago, when his physician advised a rest and retirement from active work. In 1878 he was chief of the fire department of this city. He served the fifth ward in the board of supervisors during the years of 1878 and 1879. In November 1880 he was elected member of assembly.

Mr. Evans married Miss Lillian M. Kling, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Norman Kling of this city, on Feb. 13, 1884. It was about this time that William Evans & Sons purchased a tract of 440 acres of land in Annsville. Nearly 300 acres of it was woodland and a saw mill was established there. He assumed the general supervision of the clearing of the land and saw it converted from wild land into a fine dairy farm. While overseeing this work Mr. Evans continued his residence in Rome.

The fatal illness of Mr. Evans dated back nearly four years and he had not been able to be out much during the past year. The cause of death was a complication of diseases which resulted in gradually weakening the heart's action, and a gradual wearing out of the system. The deceased was able to go to his place of business on the day before Christmas and was confined to bed only since Sunday morning. Besides his father, William Evans, his wife, Lillian M., and two children survive, Jennie May and William N. Evans, also a brother Griffith Evans of Rome, and a sister, Mrs. R. T. Jones of Philadelphia, PA.

Mr. Evans was a man of honor and integrity and during his long residence here has won the respect and esteem of all. This family has received more than an ordinary share of affliction by death, this being the fifth member to pass away within the past thirteen months, the others being Hon. I. J. Evans, Dec. 18, 1899, Dr. Edwin Evans, Aug. 16, 1900, a granddaughter, J. Evelyn Jones of Philadelphia, Pa. in April 1900, and a grandson, William H. Evans in Dec. 1900.

Mr. Evans was a member of Roman Lodge No. 223 F & AM, and Rome Council No. 150, RA.
