Tanner, Betsey Tillapaugh

Altmar - Mrs. George Tanner died Friday at the hospital in Rochester. The remains were brought here for burial. She was a sister of Dr. & Reuben Tillapaugh of this place.

The remains of Mrs. Betsey Tanner, who died in a Rochester hospital, were brought to the home of her brother, Reuben Tillapaugh, in this village, from whose home the funeral, which was largely attended, was held, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Aubry officiating. Besides her husband and three children, she is survivied by her mother, six brothers, who are, Dr. J. J. Tillapaugh, of Wolcott, Dr. Fred Tillapaugh of New York, Benjamin Tillapaugh of Mexico, R. B. Tillapaugh of Sandy Creek, Morgan Tillapaugh of Rome, Reuben E. Tillapaugh of this village, and five sisters, Mrs. O. Lewis of Ricard, Mrs. John Wolcott of Fulton, Mrs. Ernest Murray of Sandy Creek, Mrs. B. Barrows of Mexico, and Mrs. John Cobb of Richland. The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in this, their hour of sorrow.

Dr. Frederick Smith Tillapaugh, 85, died at the Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton Jan. 10. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. C. Henry Graves, of Syracuse and a granddaughter, Mrs. Henry A. Born of Syracuse. Funeral services were held from the home in Hannibal saturday afternoon, Rev. Leland wester officiating. Interment at Wolcott. The deceased had been a practicing physician in Hannibal for many years. he was born in Wisconsin Feb. 2, 1859, and was a graduate of Baltimore Medical College. He also took graduate work in Bellevue Hospital in New York and the Chicago Medical Center. At the age of 25 he began practicing in Verm(ilegible) and later at Wayland and Honeoye.


Tillapaugh, James Judson

As told in the second edition of the News last week, Dr. J. J. Tillapaugh of Wolcott died Thursday morning at 5 o'clock. He was the oldest son of a family of 16 children, 8 boys and 8 girls. he was born in Essex county, Wisconsin, March 8, 1857. When he was four years old his parents moved to a small farm at Mexico, NY. Here he attended the county school and after sacrificing much for an education graduated from Mexico Academy in 1877. He bought a small farm and in 1879 was married to Alice Tillapaugh. Five years later she died leaving a daughter, Golda Alice. The following year he sold the farm and taught penmanship at the Chaffee Business Institute, Oswego. in 1886 he married Jennie Rice. The same year he entered the New York Medical College which he attended for two years. He completed his course at the Baltimore School of Medicine, graduating in 1890, receiving an honary appointment at the Bay View Hospital, Baltimore. He began his career as a physician at Altmar, where he practiced until he moved to Wolcott in 1911, remaining here until his death. Those who knew Dr. Tillapaugh best loved him as a devoted father and husband, a genial, ernest doctor and sincere friend. He left a widow and four children, Mrs. R. E. Curtiss of Hartford, Conn., Mrs. L. R. Stillson of Plymouth, Mich., Mrs. A. J. Beebe of Fulton and Dr. Ralph Tillapaugh of Buffalo. There are four brothers and five sisters besides two grandchildren, Vivian Curtis and Jane Stillson. Interment in Glenside Cemetery.

Wolcott - Dr. James J. Tillapaugh, 68, native of Altmar, Oswego county, and for 19 yrs a practicing physician of this place died at his home here yesterday. Dr. Tillapaugh was one of the best known physicians in Wayne county and enjoyed a very large practice. Dr. Tillapaugh had been ill for a year or more with heart and kidney trouble. He is survived by his widow and four children, Mrs. Arnold Beebe of Fulton, Mrs. R. E. Curtis, H(illegible), Conn., Mrs. L. R. Stilson, Plymouth, Mich., and Dr. Ralph Tillapaugh of Buffalo. besides his bother Dr. Fred Tillpauagh of Oswego county he leaves three other brothers and five sisters.


Tillapaugh, Jennie L. Rice

Mrs. Jennie L. Tillapaugh, 86, died Thursday, April 19, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arnold J. Beebe of Unadilla. A former resident of Wolcott, she was the widow of Dr. J. J. Tillapaugh who died in 1920. A native of Sullivan County, Mrs. Tillapaugh was a member of Draper Chapter, OES, Wolcott, and Earnest Workers of Otego Presbyterian Church. Since her husband's death she had lived with the Beebes. Also surviving are a son, Dr. R. R. Tillapaugh of Astoria, two other daughters, Golda Curtis of Hartford, Conn, and Zaida Stillson of Denver, Colo., a grandson James J. Beebe of Unadilla, three granddaughters, Janet Cisnerous of Astoria, Irene Grefe of Woodside and Ruth Griffith of Denver, Colo., one great-grandchild, Jane Graves, of Syracuse, several nieces. Funeral was held at 2:30 pm Sunday at the Bailey Funeral Home, Otego, with the Rev. Clifford E. Webb of the Unadilla Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial service was held at 1 pm Monday at Glenside Cemetery, Wolcott.

Tillapaugh, Pearl Clifford

Camden - Mrs. Pearl E. Tillapaugh, 92, of 18 Third Street, widow of Rufus Tillapaugh, died Monday in the Oneida City Hospital. The daughter of Daniel and Julia Halliday Clifford, she was born Dec. 19, 1875, in the Town of Vienna and was married to Mr. Tillapaugh in 1898 in Vienna. He passed away January 1917. Mrs. Tillapaugh was a member of the Methodist Church and a former member of Vienna Chapter OES. Prior to her retirement she was employed by the Mystic Stamp Co. here. Mrs. Tillapaugh came to Camden 50 years ago and for the past 40 years had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Perin of the same address. She also leaves another daughter, Mrs. Carl A. Gerow, Oriskany Falls, two grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday at Sanborn Funeral Home with burial in Fish Creek Landing Cemetery.

Vienna - Clifford, the little son of Mr. & Mrs. Rufus Tillapaugh, died yesterday afternoon. He had been ill with pneumonia for several weeks. The funeral services will be held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Tillapaugh on Thursday afternoon.

Camden, Jan 6 (1917)

- Rufus H. Tillapaugh, aged 39 years, was fatally injured at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon while working in the Tanner woods on the McConnellsville road, about three miles from this city. He died at the Camden Hospital, where he was taken after the accident. Mr. Tillapaugh was working with a number of other men cutting wood. They sawed off a tree and Mr. Tillapaugh ran to get out of the way when it fell. He stumbled and the tree struck him across the back. When the other men ran to his assistance he said "Well, I guess I am done for this time." and lapsed into unconsciousness. He never rallied. He was taken to the hospital, where physicians worked over him, but he died in a short time. He was born in Williamstown, and spent most of his life in Vienna. He came here three years ago. Mr. Tillapaugh was a member of Vienna Lodge No. 440, F & A M and of the ME Church here. He leaves his widow and two daughters, May and Huldah Tillapaugh of this village; five sisters, Mrs. Harriet Lewis of Camden, Mrs. John Cobb of Richland, Mrs. Ida Murry and Mrs. D. L. Burrows of Syracuse, Mrs Richard Rider of Earlville; five brothers, Dr. James Tillapaugh of Wolcott, Dr. F.S. Tillapaugh of Earlville, Marvin Tillapaugh of Pulaski and Reuben Tillapaugh of Syracuse.

The funeral of Rufus Tillapaugh, who was killed by a falling tree while working in the woods Friday afternoon, was held at the family home, corner of Washington and second avenue, at 12 o'clock today. rev. Dr. A. C. Loucks, pastor of the First Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member, conducted the service, and burial was made in the family plot in Vienna, where most of his life had been spent. He came from there to Camden two years ago. Mr. Tillapaugh was born in Williamstown 39 years ago. Eighteen years ago he was married to Pearl E. Clifford of Vienna, who, with two daughters, May and Huldah, survive him. He also leaves five brothers and five sisters: Dr. James Tillapaugh of Wolcott, Dr. F. F. Tillapaugh of Hannibal, Reuben Tillapaugh of Syracuse, Morgan Tillapaugh of Pulaski, Benjamin Tillapaugh of Pennellville, Mrs. John Cobb of Richland, Mrs. Richard Ryder of Pennellville, Mrs. Ernest Morgan and Mrs. B. F. Barrows of Syracuse, and Mrs. Harriet Lewis of Camden. The bearers were W. J. Rowell, James Peacock, Alex Clifford and Benjamin Chilson, all of Vienna. Mr. Tillapaugh was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Vienna.


Tillapaugh, Solomon

Mr. Soloman Tillapaugh died at his home in this village Wednesday at the age of ninety-eight years and two months. He was born in Montgomery county in 1805 and moved to Mexico seventy five years ago, where he had resided up to the time of his death. He was a farmer and was well known, highly honored and respected. He is survived by three sons, William H. and H. H. Tillapaugh of Mexico, and N. J. Tillapaugh of North Dakota. The funeral was held at his late residence Friday.
