Larkin, Burley

Burley Larkin, a resident of this city who was generally known and esteemed, died of pneumonia at his home, 712 Calvert Street, at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, aged 57 yrs. He was sick but a few days, being taken with pains in his lungs on Tuesday last while at work. Mr. Larkin was a native of this city and always lived here. He worked in the Rome Brass and Copper Mills for a number of years, but for the last five years had been engaged in house painting. He was a member of the American Mechanics and had many friends in this city. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Otto, and two daughters, Maud Larkin and Mrs. Belle Utley, all of this city, and one sister and two brothers, Mrs. B. A. Barton of Rome, John Larkin of Elmira and Abner Larkin of Almond, NY.


Larkin, Helen Tulley

Mrs. Burley Larkin, 70, who had been ill for the past two and a half years, died at the home of her son, Otto Larkin, 604 W. Dominick St., at 12 o'clock today. She had been confined to her bed since last May.

She was formerly Helen Tulley, daughter of the late Smith and Matilda Tulley. She was born in Greenway in 1856. When she was a little girl the family moved to Rome and since that time she had lived here. Fifty-one years ago she married Burley Larkin in Rome. He died in 1899. Mrs. Larkin was a member of the Calvary M. E. Church.

Besides her son, Otto, she is survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. Belle Utley, and one sister, Mrs. Walter Farrier, both of Rome.


Last, Pansy Tanner

February 12, 1971

Mrs. William Last, 82, of Hastings, mother of Leland Last, Lee Center, died Thursday at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. The former Pansy Tanner, she was born in Oswego County, daughter of George Tanner and Betty Tillapaugh. Her husband died a year ago. Survivors include three other sons, Elmer Last, Altmar, and Robert Last and Ivan Last, Syracuse; three daughters, Mrs.Henry (Marion) Rice, Hastings, Mrs. Raymond (Amy) Trumble, Solvay, and Mrs. Frederick (May) Jesmore of Central Square; two brothers, David Tanner, Pulaski and Clyde Tanner, Marcy, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 at Watson's Funeral Home, Central Square, with interment in Altmar Cemetery.


Last, William

October 7, 1969

William A. Last, 83,of Hastings, father of Leland W. Last died Tuesday. Son of John and Carrie Pickens Last, he was born Sept. 4, 1886, in Richland. On May 14, 1908 he married Pansy Tanner. Surviving besides his wife and son are three daughters, Mrs. Henry (Marion) Rice, Hastings, Mrs. Raymond (Amy) Trumble, Altmar, Mrs. Frederick (May) Jesmore, Central Square, three other sons, Robert Last, Ivan Last, both of Syracuse, Elmer Last of Altmar, 38 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 Friday at the Taylor Vida Funeral Home, Pulaski. Interment will be in Altmar.


Lawrence, Mary Ellen Gallivan

Mrs. Thomas E. Lawrence, 81, of 510 William St., died Wednesday at the Faxton Hospital, Utica, where she had been a patient for six days. The former Mary Ellen Gallivan, she was born in Rome on Aug. 5, 1891, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jeremiah Gallivan and attended local schools. She was married to Thomas E. Lawrence in St. Peter's Church and had lived her entire life here. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church. Surviving besides her husband are four step-daughters, Mrs. Hugh (Adell) Cheney of Dunkirk, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Evans of Vernon, Mrs. Robert (Iva) Fransman of Whitesboro, and Mrs. Robert (Ada) Block of Dunkirk, a step-son, Arthur E. Lawrence of Fremont, California, a sister, Mrs. Sherwood (Margaret) Purcell of Rome, two brothers, Daniel and Timothy Gallivan both of Rome, 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 8:15 am at the Griffin and Aldridge Funeral Home and at 9 in St. Peter's Church. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.


Lawrence, Nora Tanner

Death of Mrs. Nora L. Lawrence, 39, wife of Thomas Lawrence, 411 Riverside Drive, occurred yesterday in a Rome hospital. She had been ill for six months.

She was born in Rome, daughter of Fred and the late Emma Hughes Tanner. She was married Jan. 15, 1919. Besides her husband and father she leaves a sister, Mrs. Arthur M. Schaller, Stanwix, and eight children, Thomas, Arthur, Adelia, Shirley, Neilan, Winifred, Iva and Ada.


Lawrence, Thomas

Thomas E. Lawrence Sr., 78, of 17 Taft Place, Dunkirk, formerly of 510 William St., past state president of the Isaac Walton League, died Sunday in Brook Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, after a brief illness. A director of the State Division of the Isaak Walton League of America from 1957 until his death, Mr. Lawrence was engaged in conservation work at local, regional and state levels. He served on the state Fish and Management Board under appointment by then Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, and served on an advisory group to the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks. Mr. Lawrence was a member and past president of the Rome Chapter of the Isaak Walton League and was recently honored by that organization for his work on behalf of preservation of natural resources. He was a member of the White Tail Deer Association and the State Trapping Association. A World War I veteran of the Navy, he was also a member of Fort Stanwix Barracks, World War I Veterans. He was born in Utica, Jan. 17, 1900, son of Edward Thomas and Ada Fletcher Lawrence. His first wife, the former Nora Tanner, died in 1938. His second wife, Mary Gallivan, is also deceased. Mr. Lawrence owned and operated the Lawrence Sheet Metal Shop in Rome, retiring in 1975. He was an Episcopalian. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ida) Block and Mrs. Hugh (Adele Cheney, both of Dunkirk, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Evans, Vernon, and Mrs. Robert (Iva) Fransman, Hinckley, a son, Arthur E. Lawrence, Freemont, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Henry (Ida) Golden, Utica, 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. James (Winfred) Stedman, and two sons, Thomas Lawrence Jr., and Neilan Jay Lawrence are deceased. Funeral services will be held at the Griffin and Aldridge Funeral Home at 10:30 Thursday with burial in Stanwix Cemetery.


Lewis, Maud Larkin

Mrs. Maud Lewis, aged 24 years, wife of Bertie R. Lewis, died on Friday at 7 pm at her home, 729 Calvert Street. She was a daughter of the late Burley Larkin, was born and reared in Rome and always lived here. She had many excellent qualities which endeared her to a large circle of friends who will sincerely mourn her death. Besides her husband she leaves an infant daughter, born on Friday, and a two-year old son, Claude, also her mother, Mrs. Helen Larkin, and one brother, Otto, both of Rome.
