Jackson, Emeline

Vienna, McConnellsville Mrs. Emeline Jackson died at 6:30 Thursday morning at the home of Miss Nettie Lawrence with whom she had lived the past 4 yrs. Mrs. Jackson was born in this town in 1835 and had always resided here. She was a member of the ME Church and until failing health prevented was always present at services. She had been a widow since 1862. Her husband, Stephen Jackson, was a member of Co. H 117 & is buried on southern soil. She leaves two sons, Stephen of McConnellsville and John of Canastota.

Death of James James

VERONA, Dec 6, James James, and old resident of this place died at the home of William J. Jones on Tuesday evening aged 73 years. He had for some months been in failing health suffering from a complication of diseases. His wife died some years ago, and for quite a little time he has lived by himself in a small house at the station, until within a few weeks, when his condition became such that he went to the home of a friend, Mr. Jones, to remain instead of spending his last days with his only daughter, whose health and surroundings would not permit of her doing for her parent as she would like to have administered unto him in the evening of his life. Mr James enjoyed a large acquaintance. He was an upright, industrious citizen and had the confidence and regard of many friends. In addition to his only daughter, Mrs. Joseph Meyers, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Rachel James of New York Mills, Mrs. Simon Davis of Rome and Mrs. Martha Hughes of Ogdensburg, Wis. The funeral will occur at the home of Mr. Jones on Friday afternoon at 1 and from the M. E. Church, of which he was a member at 2 o�clock. (Note Burial in Verona Cemetery)

VERONA

Mrs. Mary James, aged 48 years, wife of James James, died Friday morning of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of (illegible) days. Mrs. James had been a resident of Verona Twenty six years and for many years a consistent and valuable member of the M. E. Church. She leaves a husband and a daughter, and only child, and also a brother, Wm. Humpage of Higginsville and a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who sincerely mourn her death. The funeral was held yesterday morning at the M. E. Church. Both congregations assembling there to listen to the discourse by Rev. A. B. Warner. (Note burial in Verona Cemetery)

Jenkins, Everett J.

Everett J. Jenkins, 58, Rome grocer, died at 2:48 am today at his home at 804 Floyd Ave. Mr. Jenkins had conducted a grocery store on Floyd Ave 22 yrs and had been active until March 1 of this year when ill health forced him to cease participation in his business. Mr. Jenkins was born in the town of Western on August 3, 1875, the son of the late John and Esther Countryman Jenkins. He had lived here 32 years and prior to that resided at Delta. For eight years prior to engaging in the grocery business he was superintendent of the Union Can Company. On October 15, 1902 he married Rhuama Greenwood, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Dr. Peabody in the Baptist Church here. She survives with a sister, Mrs. J. M. Currie, a niece, Miss A. Nadine Currie, and a nephew Donald Currie. Mr. Jenkins attended the First Presbyterian Church.

Jepson, George H.

Instantly killed while working in the yards of the Mohawk Division of the New York Central at Rensselaer Friday morning, the body of George H. Jepson, formerly of East Syracuse, will be shipped to Utica for burial. Samuel T. Jepson, his son, who is a member of Company G of the Seventy-fourth New York Regiment, now in camp at Pharr, Texas, was notified of the fatality last night by his morther, Mrs. Marie Jepson of this city.

Mr. Jepson has been employed as freight conductor on the New York Central for many years and was checking up cars in the yards. He attempted to go between two cars as a switching engine hooked on and was jolted under the wheels. His body was removed to an undertaking parlor until his relatives could be notified and funeral arrangements made. Services and burial will be held Sunday at Utica. Jepson was a member of the Syracuse Lodge 624, Loyal Order of Moose, and was also a member of the Order of Railway Trainmen. He lived in Utica for several years, but previous to that was a resident of this city and East Syracuse.

Jewett, Virginia W. Clark

Mrs. Samuel F. Jewett, formerly Miss Virginia W. Clark, died at her home in Elgin, Ill. on Monday, aged 43 years. She was born in Illinois but about twenty-one years ago came east and shortly afterward was married to Mr.Jewett. The two resided in Clark Mills about seen years and at the end of that time removed to Elgin, where they had since lived. She leaves her husband, a son and a brother, also one sister, Mrs. R. G. Young of Utica.


Johnson, Alexander

Watervile - The funeral of Alexander Johnson, who was found dead Saturday about noon in the barn on the farm of Thomas Dolan, in the town of Marshall, was held from the undertaking parlors of A. W. Mallory. Coroner Dodd came here Saturday and pronounced death to be due to natural causes. Little was known of Johnson although he had worked for various farmers in this section many years. He was thought to be about 65 yrs old. He leaves no known relatives.


Johnson, Caroline B.

The death of Mrs. Caroline B. Johnson occurred at her home, 110 Huntington street on Saturday evening. Just one month before she had fallen from a stairway in the back part of the house and sustained a broken hip. While confined to the bed with this injury pneumonia set in and during the last week she failed rapidly until the end, which came very peacefully. Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Daniel and Zilpha (Britton) Shelley, who were of Pilgrim and Puritan stock, and migrated from Connecticut in 1816 to the valley of the Geneseo. It was at Geneseo, Livingston county, that the deceased was born May 9, 1819. The greater part of her active life was spent in teaching, her last position being as principal of the Akiu street school in Utica, where she remained for over 20 years. Other places where she had taught were Oneida Castle, Chittenango, Vernon and in this city. Here she taught in the Liberty street school under the late Prof. M. W. Smith, afterward school commissioner for this district. Her husband, Harvey Johnson, died about 40 years ago. For the last 15 years Mrs. Johnson has made Rome her home. Since early girlhood she had been connected with Baptist denomination and had been a member of the First Baptist Church during her residence in this city. In her nature she was self-reliant and brave, while her unselfishness made her ever thoughtful of the welfare of others. As daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend she was ever faithful and sincere in her desire to do her best. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Georgiana Johnson, one brother, Henry S. Shelley, and one sister, Mrs. George F. Hodges, all of this city. There is a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives who will greatly miss her. She was a sister of the late Edward H., William O. and A. Judson Shelley. Two sons had died, William Smith Johnson in early manhood, and Edward Henry in his infancy.

The funeral was held at two o�clock this afternoon from her late residence. Rev. H. H. Peabody, D. D., officiating. Interment was made in Rome Cemetery. The bearers were W. H. Chapin, A. F. Nash, J. J. Bundy and A. H. Wright.


Johnson, Emily

The remains of Mrs. Gilbert (Emily) Johnson of New Haven, Conn., were interred in this cemetery here last week. Deceased was formerly a resident of this place and daughter of Roswell Sage. She leaves to mourn her, a kind husband, who accompanied her remains here; also a brother, Chauncey Sage of Williamstown and a sister, Mrs. Charles Frisbie of Verona. (Note burial in Verona Cemetery)

Johnson, James

Little Falls - The body of James Johnson, an old hunter and trapper of this place, was found last evening in a boat house on the south side of the river, where he went several days ago and discharged the contents of a shotgun into his left tmeple. The body was found by Chief of Police Long and John Stark, who were called upon by relatives of Mr. Johnson to investigate his absence. They were directed to the boat house and there found the body frozen in an upright position in the chair where Mr. Johnson sat when he discharged the shotgun. He had evidently been dead several days.

Mr. Johnson was 73 yrs old and was a well known resident of this city. He was one of the few men of this locality who passed many years of their leife unting and trapping wild animals. About 30 or 40 years ago he servied on the Little Falls police force for some time.

Death in Syracuse of a Former Resident of Verona

Gertrude Bedell, aged 50 years, wife of Loren D. Jones, died at her home in Syracuse on Monday after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Jones was a daughter of Moses R. and Electa S. Bedell, old residents of Verona. She was born in that town and lived there until her marriage some thirty years ago, when she went to Syracuse, where she afterward resided. She had many excellent qualities, was a exemplary Christian and a affectionate wife and mother. A large circle of friends will sincerely mourn her death and extend sympathy to the mourning relatives. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, one sister, Mrs. George H. Barton of Syracuse and one brother, Harvery S. Bedell of Rome. Funeral services will be held at her home is Syracuse on Wednesday forenoon and interment will be made on the same day at 3 p.m. at Verona Village.

VERONA STATION Dec 7, -- Mrs. George H. Jones of Schenectady died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Jane Tipple, in this place Saturday, after and illness of ten days, aged 38 years. She learned telegraphy and for ten or fifteen years, up to the time of her marriage, three years ago, she was day operator at the New York Central station at Rome. Previous to that she had been employed in Lansingburg. Her husband is employed in the Edison Electric works at Schenectady, She had many friends in Rome, who deeply mourn her death. Joslin, Fernando

North Bay - Mr. Fernando Joslin of North Bay, fireman on the Midland Railroad, met with an accident that proved fatal about a week ago. The train had just left the depot at North Bay when the gas from the coal furnace was so strong that it blew the door of the furnace open, and the wind blew the gas into Mr. Joslin's face, which nearly suffocated him. He went to the side of the engine and stepped down on the steps to get the fresh air. This did not seem to relieve him and he jumped from the engine, receiving injuries, which casued his death about five days after. He was a much respected young man.

On Monday, at his home here, occurred the death of Harry Joslin, a well known resident, Death was due to pneumonia, which followed an attack of influenza. He is survived by his wife and three children, also his mother and the following sisters, Mrs. Lester Todd, Mrs. Joseph E. Felts, Mrs. Howard Goff, and a brother, Charles. The family has the sympathy of the community. Mrs. Joslin is ill also but is improving. (Note burial in Verona Cemetery)

Oneida, June 27, -- Elias P. Joslyn, aged 74, of the town of Verona, died at a hospital in this city Monday, where he had been an inmate for the past three months. He removed to Verona about three years ago from Brockport. He leaves one sister, Mrs. C. S. Morgan of Brockport, besides several nephews and nieces. Note: Burial in Verona Cemetery.

The late Mrs. Polly Joslyn of Homer

VERONA, May 2 -- Mrs Polly Joslyn, who died at Homer on Sunday and whose funeral was held Wednesday at that place, had many relatives in this vicinity and Rome. Her former husband, William E. York, was pastor of the Verona M. E. Church in 1858 and 9. Her father, Rev. Lyman Beach, was pastor of the Court Street M. E. Church, Rome, at the time of its erection. She leaves her present husband, Charles Joslyn of Homer, two sons and one daughter, Rev. William H. York of the Centenary Church, Syracuse, Elsie York and Mrs. Fred Briggs of Homer; two brothers, John Beach of Augusta, Charles Beach of Mansfield, Pa. She was about 75 years old.
