DESCRIPTION
OF GEN-SITE(s): The village of
Hoffenheim is one of 11 communities that comprise the town of Sinsheim. Today Hoffenheim, located 2.3 km northeast
of Sinsheim, has a population of 3,286.
The village is
the home of the, “Heimatmuseum Hoffenheim”, a small rural museum housed in
the historical rooms of the "Old Post", located at 12 Waibstadter
Strasse. The museum's emphasis is on
the depicting of rural life, living and house keeping in Hoffenheim in the
19th century, in addition club and crafts history and the history of the
gentry. Originally Hoffenheim
was owned by two families, the von Österreichs and the von Waldenburgs.
In 1618 they had reached an agreement with the villagers, and then they
reissued it in 1705. The von Österreichs had leased their half of the
village to a poor noble family, the Äscher von Bünningens. The ruling
families were Catholic, while the villagers were Lutheran. This, and an
attempt to change the old agreements regarding privileges and dues, led to
friction. The villagers appealed, over the heads of the ruling
families, to the imperial commissioners.
These appeals were repeated, but brought no success to the villagers.
Due to this a typical pattern ensued where one of the villagers emigrated to
Pennsylvania, and in the following three years at least thirty-two others
followed. The vacancies brought on by
this mass migration were filled by an influx of Jews during the 18th
century. |

DESCRIPTION OF GEN-SITE(s): Michelfeld
lies within the municipality of Angelbachtal
located in Kraichgau The name Angelbachtal comes from the
valley of the Waldangelbach, which flows through Kraichgau, and from the
municipality of the same name. In
the year 831 the village of Michelfeld is mentioned for the first time in the
manuscripts of the Lorsch codex. In this document a, free man from Mihilunfelt negotiates
with the Abbott of the monastery about a sale of land. Between the Abbott and the
Michelfelder the following exchange resulted,” Mr. Emicho received meadows
with a yield in “Mihilunfelt” from four Fuder hay. On the other hand the
mentioned free man gave “in Sunnensheim equivalent land. From early times Michelfeld was
administered by the aristocratic family of Gemmingen. In 1525 Weyrich von Gemmingen introduced
Protestantism to the village of Michelfeld and the other areas under his
rule. During the Thirty
Years’ War in the 17th century many of the villages in
the Kraichgau region were destroyed, if tribute was not paid to mercenary
armies. There was a castle in Michelfeld that was destroyed during the war in
1635. It is reported that after the
war ended in only 200 of the original 650 Michelfeld residents remained, and
that a third of the houses were destroyed.
As such most of the older buildings in Michelfeld were built in the 18th
century and, to a large extent, are in the baroque style of
architecture. The church of
Michelfeld is a building from the years 1767/68. The Hessian coat of arms at
the entrance portal shows the year 1767, while the coat of arms of the barons
von Gemmingen at the bell tower originates from the year 1768. |

DESCRIPTION OF GEN-SITE(s): Unterhof was
originally founded as a feudal settlement for a local lord. Possibly this is
the hamlet mentioned under around the year 860 together with Dielheim in the
Lorsch codex named Hiltibrandeshusen. In 1341 Unterhof was named for
the first time in documents inferiori curia (lesser or lower farm) in
rent books of the Speyer office of Rotenberg. In 1401 under the name zum
Nydernhofe is the first appearance of the name in the German language.
For centuries the prince-bishops of Speyer limited the number of farms to
three. During the Thirty Years' War the residents fled their farms and
Unterhof lay deserted and overgrown for decades. After resettlement, Unterhof
and Oberhof, as tenant farms of the local lords, were occasionally
self-administrated. First since 1932 after a drawn out fight for their
independence, the settlements belong to Horrenberg. In recent years, Unterhof
has transformed itself into a residential community that is still strongly
influenced by agriculture. |
