Richard spent 21 years in the military. After his discharge he met and married Eve.

Richard was 45 and Eve 30 when the were married. After about four months, Richard develped lung problems and was in and out of the hospital frequently. He decided to move the family to Oklahoma near Reddick, and away from the big city. for the mext 13 years he spent most of his time in the hospital in Washington D. C. travling home for a few months. Dianna said he helped with the planting every spring and then he would have to go back to the hospital.
