Cherry Tree Monument (Carol Powell) Here is located a monument marking a part of the boundary line between the Indians and the whites set down in the Treaty of Fort Stanwix of 1768.  The line of the purchase from the Indians at Fort Stanwix in that year ran up the West Branch of the Susquehanna to the fork nearest Kittanning and thence was a straight line to Kittanning.  The beginning of the straight line was marked by a cherry tree at a spot then known as Canoe Place.  The modern town was named for the tree.  The monument has been erected approximately on the site of the tree, and the counties of Clearfield, Indiana and Cambria meet near the point.
