Overview of part of Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY - from a rather blurry snapshot taken in October, 1990. Several people from my Bowman, Hermans/Hermance, and Simmons lines were buried in this cemetery. The ornate metal marker in the center of the photo belongs to William Simmons.

William's grave marker reads:

The grocery store in New York City that was run by Charles and Elma Simmons. Photo circa 1885. My father remembers hearing that Elma hated living in the city so much that she threatened divorce if they did not GO HOME to Dutchess County. I have no proof, but believe the two other people in the photo may be Elma's brother Otis Bowman and sister Mary (Bowman) Duncan (see the Bowman page for more information). A 1910 census says Otis was 50, making his birthdate about 1860 - he would have been 25 in 1885. See Otis's section above for a little more information on him. According to my information, Mary was born in 1866 and would have been about 19.
I have obituaries for Charles' mother Catharine (Hermans) Simmons (1836-1912) and for Catharine's father Richard Hermans (1808-1898). Richard's page also has some additional information about his wives and other children.

Photo of the Herrick's house taken about 1900. On the porch, left to right: Charles Herrick, his mother Josephine (Hapeman) Herrick, Charles' father James Herrick, who built the house.
