My grandmother, a founding member of the Ulster County Genealogy Society (which may still have some of her research information), published the results of her years of family research in 1987 in a book called "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches". Since this was a very small publishing run, is no longer available, and I do seem to get quite a few requests for it, I have started to try to copy much of the information from it to this web site. Updates and corrections to out-of-date or inaccurate information are encouraged - please email me at the following address:
The New York State Library in Albany, NY does apparently have a copy of "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches". Please contact them for more information.
If I, a lowly weed must be
Who cares to be a great big tree
Why try to put on airs and fuss
At least, I know the Lord loves us
He must - to sow so many seeds
To grow so many common weeds.
I have tried to compile a partial History of OUR FAMILY, starting with the Immigrant Ancestor of most lines, with the numerous off-spring. It was not possible for me to follow ALL descendants, but it should not be too difficult for most to track their way back, with the help of the family chart (or map). This should help the confused to see how all these families inter-twine. This Chart was made by a very talented friend, Florence Prehn. Without her help, I would never have "got it all together". I used to go in old "Hepsibah" (Grandma's car in the 1950s -- RT) to see cemeteries and libraries. I know I have probably made many errors, but I have yet to see a genealogy, even made by professionals, that did not have a few of those, and these families are very confusing. I hope future descendants will keep adding their Branches to the Tree. I am grateful for the help of:
Horse Tales and Miscellaneous Anecdotes
This section is under constant construction as I continue to upload sections of the book and update and correct the information. Large sections, like those for the BARRINGER and VAN KLEECK surnames, have had to be split into more than one page - generally one page for the book's information on early generations, another for more recent generations with photos and updated information, and sometimes another for transcribed documents (wills, deeds, etc.). Some surname pages are not yet available and will be added as soon as I can get the time to type them up. Most of the family lines below lived in and around Ulster and Dutchess Counties in New York state.
I am also continuing to try to work on the sections that are already uploaded as the book can be confusing in places - has a tendency to stop in the middle of discussing one surname to follow the parents and grandparents of somebody's wife in another surname. It is difficult trying to sort this stuff out so it can be read easily.
An unknown BARRIGER/BARRINGER wedding photo submitted by a correspondent. UPDATE Identified as Charles S. DUVAL and his wife Mary A. COOK - not Barringer-related, but I have no place else to put them just yet.

VAN KLEECK
(also VAN CLACK, VAN CLEAKE, VAN KLEEK, VAN KLECK, etc.)
I recently received the following email and was given permission to post it here. Freedom Plains is apparently just east of the city of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County, New York.
I purchased a photo in a Vermont antique shop. The photo is 2" by 4" of a young child, and is labeled Albie O. Van Kleeck Freedom, Plains Dutchess Co. NY. I would like to get the photo to a family member interested in genealogy.
