HOWARD LEE JONES

1945 - 1966

Killed  November 29, 1966 in Vietnam age 21

 

 

Howard Lee Jones was born February 9, 1945 the son of Howard and Helen Jones of Tupelo, Oklahoma. He was the grandson of the late Edward William and Clara Ellen (Key) Jones.

 

His grandfather was one of the Original Enrollees on the "Dawes Rolls" of the Choctaw Nation by blood.  Howard Lee Jones's ancestors were among the twenty thousand Choctaws who were forcibly relocated on what was to be called "The Trail of Tears". His ancestors were forced to leave their homeland in Mississippi and move west to what is now known as Southeastern Oklahoma.

Howard Lee lived most of his life in Tupelo, Oklahoma with his parents, seven sisters, one brother and many Aunts, Uncles and cousins.  He was Valedictorian of Tupelo High School class of 1963.

DEATH IS THE RESULT OF HOSTILE GROUND ACTION

 

Howard Lee Jones's cousin Earnest Ray Jones, the son of his father's brother, was also killed in Vietnam April 5, 1970.  Both Howard and Earnest are buried at Byrds Prairie Cemetery, Tupelo, Coal Co., Oklahoma
