ANCO STATE  ex BEREAN

Built 1961  Haugesund M.V.,Haugesund

9,003 grt

For A/S A.O. Andersen & Co., Eftf., Oslo, Norway

1964  Renamed ANCO STATE by A/S A. O. Andersen & Co, Norway.

1966  The Norwegian tanker ANCO STATE, under way from the American Gulf Coast to Pernis, ran into trouble in the early morning of Thursday 15th September 1966 off the Noorderhoofd light.Tempestuous seas had shifted the cargo and made her unstable. The captain tried to bring her about, but ANCO STATE ran her bows onto the basalt blocks of canal Nieuwe Waterweg. The ANCO STATE had, as well as a cargo of dirty oil, thousands of barrels of liquid chemicals in its tanks, amongst which was the highly toxic acrylonitrile. There was a very real danger that the cargo could escape should the ship be penetrated by rocks and thus allow toxic fumes to reach the coast. A massive rescue operation was set in motion. Salvage tugs MAASBANK and VIKINGBANK had attempted to set a line aboard without success. For three hours they had battled against the elements; The rescue boat KONINGIN JULIANA held her position and stood by, despite the raging seas. The Rotterdam tug ZWARTE ZEE and her sister WITTE ZEE arrived. They were joined, in the afternoon, by SCHOUWENBANK, STEENBANK and AZIË. Eventually lines were attached. The struggle continued to 17.30 and gradually the ANCO STATE was released from the rocks by WITTE ZEE. Next day the ship was inspected – some leakage had taken place into the void between the inner and outer safety tank; late in the afternoon she was given clearance to sail. Under her own power, but with some difficulty in steering, the ANCO STATE arrived at Pakhuismeesteren, Pernis.
