Carvel built, Wooden Dandy, 2 masted, Sailing Drifter, Elliptical stern.

Built 1871 by R.Kitto, Porthleven, Cornwall.

There is a suggestion that this vessel saw service in Mount’s Bay as PZ 49(?),Registered 27th February 1869 as an open boat; this would imply that R Kitto converted it in 1871. R Kitto made two other vessels, named Diadem PZ 468 (Registered 31 July 1869 which remained in Porthleven) and PZ 203 (1881 which was transferred to Mevagissey in 1893). The ON 67206 was not issed at Penzance. A search through the early Penzance registers for the vessel with date will be undertaken at a later date.

Sailing Trawlers by Edgar G March refers to

The great storm of 1877 which was on the third of March;

There were 36 smacks lost, all told, from various ports.

215 men and boys lost their lives leaving 88 widows and 164 orphans.

The Times 10th March 1877

Down to the last evening the Lord Mayor had received over £650 at the Mansion House in aid of the fund now being raised there for the relief of the widows & orphans of the crews of the fishing smacks belonging to the East Coast lost in the recent gales. Of that sum, £105 was contributed yesterday by the Fishmongers' Company. A deputation from Lowestoft attended at the Mansion House to thank the Chief Magistrate for his kindness in opening a fund to assist the local exertions that were being made, and in the afternoon a meeting of Billingsgate inhabitants and tradesmen was held in the ward, under the presidency of Mr Alderman Sidney, when it was resolved to petition the Corporation of London for a Grant in aid of the fund. Between £70 and £90 was promised or collected in the room. Of the distressed relatives, 138 reside in Great Yarmouth, 46 at Lowestoft, 40 at Great Grimsby, 18 at Hull and 6 at Ramsgate.

The Times 16th March 1877

At the close of yesterday, the fund now being collected at the Mansion House by the Lord Mayor for the relief of the widows and orphans of the fishing smacks lost in the recent gales, amounted to over £2,300. Among the subscriptions received during the day were those of the Drapers' Company for £105, Messrs NM de Rothschild and Sons £30 and Lord Overstone £20.
