22nd January 1913 Wrecked  Taylor's Bank Revetment, Crosby Channel

On voyage from Baltimore to Liverpool with general cargo.

 

SS WINNIE

Ferguson & Reid

Built 1896 by J.Blumer & Co

2,532 tons; 304 ft x 44ft x 20.6ft ; 245 nhp; triple-expansion engines.

10th November,1917  Wrecked in Busso Sound, Vardo,

On voyage from Archangel to Lerwick with a cargo of pit props.

Eight guns, twin screw.

Sold 11 July 1905 and eventually towed to Stavanger, Norway, to be scrapped

David J Hepper writes ....

She served on the South American station 1890 to 1892;

North America/West Indies station 1892 to 1894;

South America again from 1894.

She returned home in March 1896.

Refitted and repaired at Portsmouth during 1896;

served on South American station from 1897 to 1900;

paid off into reserve at Portsmouth March 1900.

Out of reserve May 1901 for service in South African waters;

from 1903  South American station.

Returned home for last time in mid-1904 and paid off for disposal.

Sold in July 1905 for scrap and ended up in a scrap yard in  Stavanger.

The National Maritime Museum catalogue indicates they have two photos of her,

negative numbers N.3801 and N.3802.

She was eventually lost in a storm in 1911, off Ballycastle, Ireland
