The Millett Family

of Penzance

J L V Millett says his father was “one of the chief officers in the Customs at Gloucester" and "My father's family had lived at Penzance for generations,
and several of them had followed the sea
".

John Lester Vivian Millett born 22nd March 1865, Westfield Lodge, Longford near Gloucester.

JLV Millett says of his mother's family, "her father, Joseph Vivian, was in command of the East India Company's frigates. Her half brother was Captain Alfred Maclean Wait of the Union Line".

Going backwards from John Curnow Millett……..

John Curnow Millett - 3rd child ( out of 8 ) of John Thomas Millett - born 17th Oct 1798 Nanpusker Phillack; educated Guy's Hospital and Huntarian School;  LSA 1823; MRCS 1824; Surgeon Penzance Dispensary to 21 Apr 1869; died 7th Feb 1873 Market Jew Street, Penzance: Married to Ann Emily Michell, Aug 1823; daughter of Robert Michell (of Truro ) and Ann ( of London ).

The family can be traced back to Robert Millett, secretary to Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel ( both drowned when the ASSOCIATION was wrecked 22nd Oct 1707 ). Robert Millett was son of Leonard Millett, mayor of Marazion.

There is, of course, the connection with Sir Humphry Davy and John Tonkin MRCS; Robert Millett left a son, Leonard Millett, also mayor of Marazion; one of his sons was Humphry Millett mercer of Penzance; one of his daughters married Robert Davy; They were the parents of Sir Humphrey Davy. When Humphry and Elizabeth Millett died, their children were looked after by the Tonkin family. There is also a connection by marriage to the Fry family of Penzance; Joseph Fry first appeared in Penwith in 1768.
