The Family Of

John Eva BARTLE and Nannie T GRENFELL

Milton, Wisconsin

John Eva Bartle was born April 16, 1822 at Camborne, Cornwall, England.  I believe his parents were William Bartle and Sally Eva.

John traveled with his uncle, Henry Eva, to the Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin area about 1833.  They were miners, but together they also started Dodgeville’s first butcher shop.

On July 22, 1848, John Eva Bartle married Nannie T Grenfell at Dodgeville.  Nannie was born about November 9, 1828 at Penzance, Cornwall, England, and came with her family to the Dodgeville area about 1845.  She was the daughter of Pascoe GRENFELL and Jane Trenbath (or Trembath).

Though he made a couple trips to California to mine gold, John Bartle lived the rest of his life in Dodgeville.  At various times, he operated a butcher business, owned a hotel, and started a furniture store.  He served for several years as village treasurer and clerk of the school board.

John died January 30, 1891 in Dodgeville.  Nannie, who married James Trezona in 1895, died October 23, 1898.  John and Nannie are buried at East Side Cemetery in Dodgeville.

The children of John and Nannie are:

Mary Ann Bartle, born about 1849 in Wisconsin.  She married a ROWE or ROLFE and they went to Colorado.

James Henry Bartle, born November 21, 1852 in Dodgeville, Iowa Co, WI.  He married Jennie ROGERS December 2, 1876 in Ridgeway, Iowa Co, WI and they settled in Dodgeville.  James was a carpenter and wheelwright, but his health forced him to retire in the late 1880’s.  He was soon elected Dodgeville’s city treasurer, however, and served for many years.  One day, as he strolled home for lunch, a truck struck him.  He died from his injuries on March 2, 1922.  Jennie died April 11, 1926 in Dodgeville.  They are buried at East Side Cemetery, Dodgeville.  The children of James and Jennie are:

Sources and Acknowledgments

Though I took great care in my research, you can be sure to find errors ranging from typos to misinterpretations to inaccurate assumptions.  Please forgive me.

In cases where I wasn’t sure about the accuracy of facts, I tried to make the uncertainty clear in my presentation or else left the data out.

I personally researched and verified much of the data you see on this page.  Some of the sources I used were:  vital records, such as marriage and death records; published newspaper accounts of events, including marriage announcements and obituaries; and census records.  A nice biography of John Eva Bartle was published in the History of Iowa County, Wisconsin (Chicago: Western Historical Co, 1881.)  Please contact me for source information applying to specific data.

Thank you Steve Bartle, great-grandson of William P Bartle, for numerous clues about the Bartles and the Grenfells.
