HOES FAMILY BAPTISMS FROM EARLY CHURCH RECORDS OF NEW YORK STATE AND WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS.BY L. HASBROUCK VON SAHLER.
THE American ancestor, Jan Tyssen Goes, or Hoes, was an early settler at Beverwyck, now Albany, and many of his descendants have been men of prominence in the various walks of life, chief among them being the eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, whose mother was Mary Hoes, and whose wife was Hannah Hoes. Jan Tyssen Hoes married first, Breechje Maryns, widow of Claes Cornelissen von Voorhout, and second, Styntje Janse van Hoesen, daughter of Jan Fraussen van Hoesen, by whom he had the following children:
  1. Matthys, m. Cornelia Mattheussen van Deursen. 1900.) Hoes Family BaIisms.
  2. Dirk, m. Lybetje Luykassen Wyngaart.
  3. Jan, m. Margarita Wyngaart, widow of Emanuel van Schaick; second Jannetje__________.
  4. Anna, m. Isaac Vosburgh.
  5. Teuntje, m. first, Thomas Winne; second, Jacob Turk.
  6. Judith, m. Isaac Hendrickssen Burger (Burghardt).
  7. Mayke, m. Burger van Huyck.
  8. Jacobus. bp. May i, 1687.
The Dutch pronunciation of the surname Goes is Hoes, and so, after the English took possession of New Netherlands, the family in general spelled the name as it was pronounced, while some changed it to Gors, which was again changed to Goss. As was usual, it appears in many forms of spelling in the early records. The following entries were collected for a special purpose in my genealogical work, and as a Hoes genealogy has not been published, although the family would appreciate one, I think that they will be valued, not alone by the family, but by brother genealogists. _______________________________________________________________
