                                      FINGER LAKES OF NEW YORK STATE
 

There are eleven lakes combined in what is called the Finger Lakes region. In assessing information about the Finger Lakes  it would only be  proper for  the following  information to  be included along with  listing of the Indian word meanings. (Miscellaneous 5) Also a bit of information acquired from the New York Finger Lakes circular that has been  distributed for  this area  of the state of New York are included.

CONESUS "Always Beautiful"
Length 8 miles, maximum depth 66 ft.  Elevation 818 feet.

HEMLOCK The only lake that was named by the white man. Its meaning refers to the Indian word "Ohnehda". Length 17.1 miles, maximum depth 91 feet, Elevation 905 feet.

CANADICE "Long Lake" Length 91 miles, maximum depth 95 feet, Elevation 1096 feet.

HONEOYE "Finger Lying" Length 3 miles, maximum depth 30 feet. Elevation 818 feet.

CANANDAIGUA "Chosen Spot" or "Chosen Place" length 15.5 miles, maximum depth 276 feet.  Elevation 688 feet.

KEUKA "Canoe Landing" Length 19.6 miles, maximum depth 187.
Elevation 715 feet.

SENECA "Place of the stone" or "Stoney Place" Length 38 miles, maximum depth 632 feet.
Elevation 445 feet.

CAYUGA"Boat Landing" Length 96 miles, maximum depth 435 feet.
Elevation 384 feet.

OWASCO "Floating Bridge" or "Crossing Place" Length 11 miles, maximum depth 177 feet.
Elevation 710 feet.

SKANEATELES "Long Lake" Length 15 miles, maximum depth 350 feet.
Elevation 867 feet.

OTISCO "Waters Dried Away"Length 6 miles, maximum depth 66 feet.
Elevation 784 feet.
