Metton AT's
NORTH ERPINGHAM HUNDRED - NORFOLK COUNTY
- PARISH STRAYS.
Transcribed & kindly
contributed by Honor Jones.
During the early 1700's many couples did not
marry in their expected parishes and caused "brick walls "for researchers.
It is now thought that CHURCH REPAIRS caused this problem. Couples went to
another parish for their marriage, as their church was being repaired. Some
were being repaired for 20 odd years.
No marriage has been entered if one of the
parties were "of this parish".

FOOTNOTE FROM HONOR:
By way of explanation, I have the METTON AT's
transcribed and found all these marriages entered for the period noted. When
you are searching for a marriage of a couple both born in the same parish you
tend to think you will find their marriage in that town, especially if they
continued having children there.
Many of us have been "brick walled" with these
marriages, and cannot understand why. I have now determined that during the
early 1700's up to as late as 1770 the Churches in the North Erpingham Hundred
were under constant repair, badly needed I think. Many of the parish AT's I
have bear this out. I have been extracting these ( what I call STRAY
MARRIAGES) and putting them on the list. It has helped several folks to find
the odd marriage that should have been performed under normal circumstances in
their own parish.
