called "The Musical Trio," published by The Trio Music Company in
Waco, McLennan County, TX. That company was founded in 1892 by John
Edmond Thomas, Franklin Lycurgus Eiland, and J. M. Greer. Emmett's
brother Earl Frederic "Fred" Dean was a contributing writer for the
periodical.
Emmett Dean, along with Franklin Eiland and Homer Elliott, founded
the Southern Development Normal Music School in Waco. The school
specialized in the study of sacred music and offered courses that
included theory, harmony, composition, and voice. Dean also developed
the "S.D.N. Theory of Music" textbook, a systematic course of
instruction in the fundamental principles of music, which is still in
use today. He taught singing for over 40 years, and wrote some 500
hymns and songs.
