ROBERT J. SWAIM, M. D., physician and surgeon of Leesburg, Camp county, is a son of A. H. and Diana (Felton) Swaim, and was born in Pulaski county, Arkansas, October 1, 1856. He is of Southern parentage throughout, his father being a native of Tennessee, and his mother a native of Georgia. His father moved to Arkansas when a comparatively young man, and settled in Pulaski county. He was a farmer of plain, unpretentious life a fair representative of his calling, and a well-esteemed, useful citizen.
The subject of this sketch is the fourth of a family of eight children. He was reared mainly in his native county. He moved to Texas some years ago, and began the solution of the bread and butter problem in Rusk (now Gregg) county, as a farmer. He followed agricultural pursuits up to 1878, when he began to read medicine under Drs. Hamilton & Barnett, of Kilgore, Gregg county. He graduated in medicine from the Louisville University (Louisville, Kentucky) in March, 1880. He practiced in Kilgore two years; then at Simpsonville, Upshur county, and then moved to Leesburg, Camp county, his present residence. He has a large and increasing practice. He is thoroughly alive to the needs, as well as the possibilities of his profession. He is enthusiastically devoted to it; has prepared himself well for it, and unlike many others, though somewhat removed from the centers of intellectual activity, he keeps fully abreast of the best thought of the times, adopting the new and discarding the old, as scientific research extends the limits of medical knowledge, and practical experience demonstrates the advisability of changes.
September 8, 1881, Dr. Swain (sic) married Mary M., daughter of Thomas M. Leach, of Tennessee.
