11-4:
     Capt. William Hoyt (Jr, brother to Lucinda), b.ab. Oct 1785; m. Mary C. Brown (b.ab. 1790; d. Feb. 2, 1867) dau. Nathaniel and Rebecca I. Brown [gs]; Wm & Mary (Brown) Hoyt are buried (2nd burial?) at the left end of Row K, in the Centervale Cem., St. Johnsbury Ctr. with other Hoyts [visit]; Nath'l and Rebecca Brown are buried here (11-7) just to the right of the W.H.H. footstone, which is just to the right of Lucinda Hoit (11-3).
   Capt. William d. of dropsy at the St. Johnsbury Poor House July 11, 1857; he was a farmer in early life, but had been insane for the last several years of his life [StJdc(4:167)]. He had been "for many of the last years of his life, insane, and a town charge - though he was far from being an encumbrance to the town" [Remembrance Notice in the Caledonian Mar 06, p.3, col.1].
   At Town Meeting, March 2nd 1858 the town "On Motion Voted that the Overseer of the Poor be directed to purchase a suitable set of Gravestones, Not Exceeding in value the sum of twenty dollars to be Erected on the grave of Capt. William Hoyt." [Town Meeting Records] (there is no footstone with his headstone now). The Overseer of the Poor's Records of expenditures lists under the date of 1858 May 27, "Order to Brigham & Crossman for Grave Stone for Capt. William Hoyt, $20.00".
       June 21, 1826 papers were filed in Caledonia County Probate Court requesting an inquiry into William Hoit who "in our opinion has become insane". March 28, 1828 papers were signed ordering his real and personal estate sold to settle his debts, excepting one "two year old heifer assigned to wife, Mrs. Hoyt" and "Assignment of guardianship of the minor children of William Hoit Jr.(sic), an insane person residing at St. Johnsbury . . . assigned to Mr. Ide.
     I. "Rebecca, age 14 {b. ab. 1813}
     II. William Jr.(sic), age 13 {b. ab. 1814}
     III. Rufus, age 11 {b. ab. 1816}
     IV. Lucinda, age 9 {b. ab. 1818}
     V. Ephraim, age 3" {b. ab. 1824}.
Of these, Ephraim, b.ab. Nov. 16 1824 son of William and Mary Hoyt, d. Lyndon Feb. 5/6, 1901 and is buried at Centervale next to W.H.Hoyt, Mary Hoyt, & Capt. Wm. Hoyt [gs/dc].

       NOTE: In the Centervale Cemetery are found the coped white marble gravestones (w/o footstones) of Capt. William and wife, and the white marble monolithic gravestone of his brother, Nathaniel E., b.ab. 1806; d. March 28, 1846 AE. 39. However, that cemetery was not chartered until 1864 - after Capt. William and Nat'l had already been buried.
   There are coped white marble gravestones dated (1840-80) near Lucinda Hoit that are accompanied by white marble monolith footstones, which leads one to entertain the possibility that maybe Capt William Hoyt was buried with his wife, brother, son, and sister Lucinda in this cemetery and when his daughter-in-law died (after the new cemetery was opened) he, his wife, and son, were moved to that cemetery and the son's footstone left behind.
   The only W. H. Hoyt found in St. Johnsbury, d. May 19, 1872 and shares a gs next to his father, Capt. William at Centervale, with his widow who d. Dec. 30, 1877. William H. Hoyt's hexagonal spire monument matches that of Nathan & Rebecca Brown's, which adds to the probability that he belongs to the lone footstone. {A William Harrison Hoyt (1816-1897) lived in Lyndon and, although I have not found his grave, his father & son are both buried at Lyndon Ctr., so he is not likely the Goss Hollow "W.H.H."}.
   Also found in this part of this cemetery is the original stone for Seth Willard Goss who d. in 1818 and now has a newer marble stone next to, and matching, his parents' stones.
   It is, therefore, my opinion that the Hoyt families were, for the most part, removed from this section of this cemetery to another cemetery in the late 1800s and that Lucinda could not be moved on account the white pine next to her in 1815 was by then too large to dig up.
