Maj. D. J. Burchett Dies At Age Of 87
Native Louisian Expires Wednesday at Home in Mt. Sterling


Maj. D. J. Burchett died at his home in Mt. Sterling, Ky., on Wednesday morning, October 23 after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. Until recently, he was able to attend to his duties of president of the Traders National Bank, notwithstanding his advanced age. The funeral and burial took place at Mt. Sterling yesterday afternoon at two o'clock.

Major Burchett was a native of Louisa and was prominent in civic and business circles here. In politics he was a state figure for many years. He was a veteran of the war between the states and won the rank of major as a young man in the Union army. He was the nominee of the Republican party for Congress at one time and later was appointed United States Marshal for Kentucky by President Harrison. Boyd and Lawrence counties were represented by him twice in the legislature. He was a mason. About 20 years ago he moved to Mt. Sterling where he operated a large farm and afterward became interested in the banking business. He had served as president of the First National Bank of Louisa while here. Major Burchett is survived by daughters and sons as follows: Mrs. J. F. Ratcliff, of Huntington; Mrs. G. R. Vinson, of Louisa; Mrs. Audie Biggs, of Mt. Sterling; John C. Burchett, of St. Albans, W. Va.; D. J. Burchett, Jr., of Lexington; Mrs. Sarah Atkins, of Louisa is the only surviving sister.
