William Lock Dies Yesterday At Home Here
Civil War Veteran Was 95; Funeral To Be Thursday


Chauncey, Ohio - William Lock, Sr., 95 died shortly after noon yesterday at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Lock, Monroe Avenue, this city. He had been in failing health for some time, but had only been bedfast about a week.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal Church. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Gilbert B Courtney, this city, minister of the Christian Church. The funeral cortege will leave this city after the services by motor for Wellston, Ohio, where burial will be made. The casket will be opened again in the cemetery at Wellston.

Mr. Lock was born in Virginia, January 1, 1832. He came to Wellston, Ohio after he married, where the family home was for several years. About 20 years ago he came to the Hocking Valley and resided in Monday, Ohio before coming to this city. His wife and 3 daughters preceded him in death, His wife died 18 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church for many years, when he transferred his membership to the United Brethren Church of which he had been a member for 20 years.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1861 in the six-teenth Kentucky Infantry under General Garfield. He engaged in the first fight in Paintsville, KY at the head of the Big Sandy River against Humphrey Marshall. He was engaged in a number of hard battles and during the battle at Hickory Ridge he had his mustache shot off, it is said.

Mr. Lock leaves three sons, James Lock, Henry Lock and William Lock, all residents of Chauncey. He also leaves 27 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren, a number of them living in this city and vicinity. The Sons of Veterans and old soldiers will attend the services at the residence and church and conduct their services at both places.
