Funeral of Capt. Whitten


The funeral of Capt. James C. Whitten will be held at his recent home, 44 Oakwood avenue, Wednesday at 1 p.m. Captain Whitten was born May 17, 1839, at Woodsfield, Monroe county, O., and died Jan. 3, 1910. He leaves a wife and mother, Mrs. Jemima Long, 93 years of age, who lives in Otway, O.

Mr. Whitten enlisted in Co. A, 14th regiment of Kentucky, which was a part of the 23rd Corps of the Army of the Ohio, and served until after the war was over, receiving his discharge March 16, 1867. He rose from the ranks to the position of captain. He was specially honored by being elected a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion on Nov. 2, 1902, an organization formed for the recognition of very special faithfulness and bravery. President McKinley was and Gen. Foraker is a member of this order. The only other veteran of Newark so honored as the late Judge Jonathan Reese. Captain Whitten has served his country not only as a soldier, but occupied several public offices of trust at his former home in Ashland, Ky., among which was judge of the police court. Another of the valiant soldiers in the Civil War has gone, and soon the Grand Old Army will be entirely a matter of history.
