CLAYTON HOME QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
By Lee Elmore
A 156 year old house on Diamond Mill Rd., Clayton, has been approved by the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places of the National Park Service.
The lovely old house, built in 1821 by Joseph FLory, is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Hopfengardner, who have lived there for 15 years. Hopfengardner had driven by, admired the house, and when he found it was for sale, he purchased it. Over a year was spent in remodeling, as it had deteriorated over the years.
The 10 room house, which sits on 35 acres, is described by the Ohio Hstorical Society thus:
This T-plan country federal farm house sits on a knoll on bedrock. It has a high front foundation of stone with a recessed cellar door. The facade is of Flemish bond brick and there is a three-panel door witha Colonial REvival broken pediment frontspiece. It is located on an outstanding rural site.
The original section of the home is of brick and a frame addition was added in 1861. A spring house witha lattice-enclosed section is an attractive feature of the property. The spring is still used by the Hopfengardners. The house stands on the west side of Diamond Mill Rd., just south of RT. 440.
The kitchen was original in the basement when the house was first built and the spring flowed across the floor, providing water for the household.
Sycamore logs, supporting the roof, can be seen from the attic and Hopfengardner reports the bark is still intact. Four fireplaes are in the house, one in the basement, two in the living area and one in the master bedroom.
Hopfengardner is a retired abstractor for Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties, which has made him well-qualified to research the records on the old home. He has tracked down the history of the families that built and lived in the house and has collected old deeds and lists of items sold at estate sales. Old records indicate wages paid for some of the remodeling were as low as 50 cents a day.
The original land the house stands on was bought by Jacob Worman in 1806 after the Northwest Territory was established. Joseph Flory, a Revolutionary War veteran, who had moved from Pennsylvania in 1806 "took up" land in Montgomery County near Liberty, then moved to Clay township about 1817.
Flory built the home in 1821 and then died in 1823, just as the house was completed. He worked as a farmer and blacksmith and had a son, Jacob, who was a cobbler. An old cobbler's bench, which was found in one of the outbuildings, now stands at the Hopfengardner's front door.
Jacob bought out the other two heirs. He later became the proprietor of Brookville as he established the first plat of 15 lots, laid out in 1850.
Jacob had four children who are buried along the creek on the property-- Mary, Susanna, John, and Margaret.
Hamilton M. Turner bought the farm from Flory's estate in 1868. Since Turner's house still stands in Clayton, it was presumed he did not reside on the farm. Turner was an enterprising and a community leader who served on the school board.
He owned the mill pond that fed the large distillery on Route 49 in Clayton, a saw mill and a flouring mill in Salem (Clayton). He had the Flory property for four years.
Turner was born in Maryland of Swiss derivative Dunkard parentage, migrated to Ohio in 1862 and married Harriet Wampler.
John Sayler (or Saylor) bought the property in 1872 and it is believed he made a small addition.
When the home was built in 1821, an old Indian trail ran from Salem to Union and the only roads in the area were what is now Route 49 and the Salem-Brookville Rd.
Mrs. Hopfengardner has lovingly furnished the home with antiques, many handmade, and a blend of English, French and Italian-style furniture. The home stands as an example of how the charm of the old can adapt to the conveniences of modern life, resulting in a happy blend of life-styles.
