They sailed across the ocean to a better life

If we believe that Hans Zaug is the ancestor of our Christian, then we can safely say that our Zaug/Zug family were of Swiss and German descent. I am fairly certain to the kinship of Hans and Christian after reading an entry in the book,The Three Zug (Zook) Brothers of 1742, by Paul Hostetler.   That entry, on page s 2-4, was a letter, dated April 17, 1880, and sent to Michael Zug from John Hertzler, Sr.  This letter tells a bit of the genealogy as remembered by the telling of it from his mother Barbara Zug (daughter of Christian Zug and Magdalene   Blank Zug.   In any event, Christian was at least from Germany.

Notes for CHRISTIAN ZUG:

The Christian Zug house built before 1760 was about 10 miles from Valley Forge.  Family tradition tells that during the Revolutionary War American soldiers tore away fences, etc....once when old mother Zug was talking fresh loaves from the oven, some soldiers snatched away all but 1 loaf, which she had hidden under her apron.  She ran into the house saying, "this one is for me."  The soldiers didn't argue, they let her have it.

From the book, Two Centuries of Brothersvalley by Austin Cooper:

"The Beeghly family descends from a German Noble family, by the name of Buechele, this Nobleman, having married a morganatic wife, (a man of Royal rank marrying a woman of inferior rank, whose children are legitimate but cannot inherit their fathers rank or possessions). When the Nobleman is ready to inhabit his palace, then he must get rid of this morganatic wife, and marry a wife of his own rank. Generally in an instance as this the morganatic wife was sent somewhere out of the country by the man of higher rank. This being the case in the Buechle family, this nobleman was about to take his castle, in the Province of Baden, and therefore he sent his wife and on son to America. The name of this son was Michael Joshua Buechele, who was born near the town of Baden, Germany, on February 2, 1739. It was sometime during the year of 1750, that this Nobleman sent his morganatic wife and her son to America. They landed in the colony of Pennsylvania, and settled at German town, PA.

They resided here a short time (about six months) when they received word from the motherland, Germany, that this mother had fallen heir to a large fortune in Germany. The rules of Germany were that in a case of this kind the mother and all her children had to come back to Germany to claim it. At this time traveling over the ocean was very hazardous, and also dangerous, and therefore they pondered for a while whether they should return to Germany. Finally making up her mind to return, they started the return journey in the year 1751 or 1752. The ship they were traveling on was boarded by sea-pirates, by whom this mother was killed and her son Michael, a lad of twelve or thirteen years of age was taken captive by the pirates. This son remained a captive of these pirates for about two years. One night while the ship of these pirates was anchored in the Philadelphia harbor, this lad, Michael Buechele, made his escape, and returned to Germantown, Pa., where he was reared by a German family there.

In the year 1762, he took to himself to be his lawful wedded wife, one named Barro Inken, who was born and raised in Bucks County, Pa. He then made his home in Bucks County, Pa., where there were born to them three sons, namely, Jacob, John and Joseph. Michael Buechele was member of the Amish faith, as to whether he united with this faith in Germany or after he settled at Germantown, I cannot ascertain, but am inclined to believe that after he was at Germantown."

There is still more of this story written in the book Two Centuries of Brothersvalley by Austin Cooper beginning on page 408.

Madison Township, Montgomery Co., Ohio History

Madison township was formed from Jefferson and Randolph townships on March 7, 1809. By 1820 it had reached its current

structure. Some of the settlers, such as John Williams and David Ward settled in the township about 1801.

About 1803, a large family of Ullery, Ulrick, and Ulrich came to the township. In 1807 Joseph and Emanuel Flory were the first

of a large group of Germans from Somerset and Franklin counties in Pennsylvania to settle in the township.

CLAYTON HOME QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

By Lee Elmore

A 156 year old house on Diamond Mill Rd., Clayton, has been approved by the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places of the National Park Service.

The lovely old house, built in 1821 by Joseph FLory, is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Hopfengardner, who have lived there for 15 years. Hopfengardner had driven by, admired the house, and when he found it was for sale, he purchased it. Over a year was spent in remodeling, as it had deteriorated over the years.

The 10 room house, which sits on 35 acres, is described by the Ohio Hstorical Society thus:

This T-plan country federal farm house sits on a knoll on bedrock. It has a high front foundation of stone with a recessed cellar door. The facade is of Flemish bond brick and there is a three-panel door witha Colonial REvival broken pediment frontspiece. It is located on an outstanding rural site.

The original section of the home is of brick and a frame addition was added in 1861. A spring house witha lattice-enclosed section is an attractive feature of the property. The spring is still used by the Hopfengardners. The house stands on the west side of Diamond Mill Rd., just south of RT. 440.

The kitchen was original in the basement when the house was first built and the spring flowed across the floor, providing water for the household.

Sycamore logs, supporting the roof, can be seen from the attic and Hopfengardner reports the bark is still intact. Four fireplaes are in the house, one in the basement, two in the living area and one in the master bedroom.

Hopfengardner is a retired abstractor for Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties, which has made him well-qualified to research the records on the old home. He has tracked down the history of the families that built and lived in the house and has collected old deeds and lists of items sold at estate sales. Old records indicate wages paid for some of the remodeling were as low as 50 cents a day.

The original land the house stands on was bought by Jacob Worman in 1806 after the Northwest Territory was established. Joseph Flory, a Revolutionary War veteran, who had moved from PEnnsylvania in 1806 "took up" land in Montgomery County near Liberty, then moved to Clay township about 1817.

Flory built the home in 1821 and then died in 1823, just as the house was completed. He worked as a farmer and blacksmith and had a son, Jacob, who was a cobbler. An old cobbler's bench, which was found in one of the outbuildings, now stands at the Hopfengardner's front door.

Jacob bought out the other two heirs. He later became the proprietor of Brookville as he established the first plat of 15 lots, laid out in 1850.

Jacob had four children who are buried along the creek on the property-- Mary, Susanna, John, and Margaret.

Hamilton M. Turner bought the farm from Flory's estate in 1868. Since Turner's house still stands in Clayton, it was presumed he did not reside on the farm. Turner was an enterprising and a community leader who served on the school board.

He owned the mill pond that fed the large distillery on Route 49 in Clayton, a saw mill and a flouring mill in Salem (Clayton). He had the Flory property on four years.

Turner was born in Maryland of Swiss derivative Dunkard parentage, migrated to Ohio in 1862 and married Harriet Wampler.

John Sayler (or Saylor) bought the property in 1872 and it is believed he made a small addition.

When the home was built in 1821, an old Indian trail ran from Salem to Union and the only roads in the area were what is now Route 49 and the Salem-Brookville Rd.

Mrs. Hopfengardner has lovingly furnished the home with antiques, many handmade, and a blend of English, French and Italian-style furniture. The home stands as an example of how the charm of the old can adapt to the conveniences of modern life, resulting in a happy blend of life-styles.
