...

Thomas Albion Uttley was born in Hartlepool, 3rd June 1884, the oldest child of Thomas Uttley and Hannah Sedgwick.

His middle name 'Albion' comes from the name of the ship that brought his parents safely home to England from Canada.

Thomas was about 14 years old, when the family moved from Hartlepool to Loughborough. According to family stories he stood on the railway platform and cried to be so far away from the sea.

He married Ellen Carey on 1st April 1907. She was the daughter of Ellen Tomlin and John Carey, a dye worker at Clarks Dye Works.

Thomas Uttley and family

Thomas originally worked as an engineer, like his father. When advised, by his doctor, to find an outdoor profession for the sake of his health, he changed to being a milkman.

Thomas and Ellen lived at 96 Paget Street, in Loughborough, not far from Ellen's parents. They had six children, five daughters and a son.

This picture shows Thomas and Ellen on the beach with their five daughters, before their son was born. It was taken on holiday in Skegness. Thomas could only get one days holiday from the milk round, so had only joined the family for the day.

In June 1939, Thomas married his second wife, Mary Carey. She was his first wife's younger sister.

Thomas continued with his milk round until he died in his 80's.
