Thomas Uttley was born in Barnsley in 1828. His father was
George Uttley, a stone mason.
In 1847, Thomas Uttley
married Jane Bacchus in Baxtergate, Whitby. She was the daughter
of Thomas Backas, a stone mason.
Their first two children, John William Uttley and Alfred
Uttley, were born in Whitby, in 1850 and 1853 respectively.
Thomas worked as a stone mason and he and his family
moved around a lot to wherever he could find work. Their next child, Anne, was born in Leeds in 1855,
then Emily in Millsborough, 1857. Their last two children, George Thomas,
and Ada were both born in Loughborough, in 1861 and 1867 respectively.
Thomas Uttley died in Loughborough in 1871, and his
wife Jane died there in 1877.
