Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Page 305   ARLINGTON is a village and parish in Barnstaple union, containing, by the census of 1861, 219 inhabitants, and 2535 acres ; in the deanery and hundred or Shirwell, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, North Devonshire, 7 miles north-east from Barnstaple. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. James Hamilton Chichester, M.A., had the tithes commuted at £270 per annum, with residence and 85 acres of glebe. The church is a handsome Gothic edifice, dedicated to St. James, consisting of nave, chancel, vestry, and a transept on the south side, opening into the nave by a panelled arch, containing Sir Bruce Chichester`s pew, with the family vaults underneath. The church was rebuilt in 1843, with the exception of the tower, which is of the 15th century, and contains six bells. The interior is handsomely fitted with oak. There are some small charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. ARLINGTON COURT, the seat of Sir Alexander Palmer Bruce Chichester, Bart., is now being enlarged and improved ; it is situate in the midst of magnificent grounds, having a drive of three miles from the lodge to the court.
