ATHERINGTON is a village and parish in Barnstaple union, containing, by the census of 1861, 598 inhabitants, and 3326 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of North Tawson and Winkleigh, North Devonshire; 7 miles north-east from Torrington, 7 south-east from Barnstaple, 8½ south-west from South Molton, and about 1 mile from Umberleigh Station on the North Devon Railway. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. James Arthur, B.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1839, at £416 per annum, with residence and 205A. 3R. 21P. of land. There is also a manor, containing about 100 acres, attached to the rectory. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, and aisle, and a fine ancient carved oak screen which was brought from Umberleigh Chapel. The Baptists and Wesylans have places of worship here. There is an Endowed School for children of both sexes, and also one belonging to the Baptists.

UMBERLEIGH is a hamlet of this parish, in the valley of the Taw, and on the North Devon Railway, at which it has a station. A chantry chapel formerly existed here, but it was disused in 1800, and the remains are now used for farm purposes. Arthur Bassett, Esq., is lord of the manor of Umberleigh, which includes this parish; also the adjoining one of High Bickington.

LANGRIDGE is also a hamlet forming part and parcel of this parish.
