BERRY-POMEROY is a village and parish in Totnes union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1065 inhabitants, and 4525 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Hayter, East Devonshire. 1 1\2 miles from Totnes. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Arthur Joseph Everett, M.A., had the tithes commuted at £420 per annum, with residence and 2 1\2 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Duke of Somerset, who is also impropriator of the rectorial tithes. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower with four bells. There is a monument in the north aisle, of the Elizabethan style, to the memory of the son of the Protector Somerset, with his wife and eleven children; the lady was a Champernowne. The Duke of Somerset is lord of the manor. There are some charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor.

BERRY POMEROY CASTLE, which was built by Ralph de Pomerai, in the reign of William the Conqueror, to whom the manor was granted by that monarch, was for 500 years the noble seat of that family, but was dismantled after the civil wars, and is now a ruin; there being nothing left of its former grandeur only a few walls crumbling to the dust.

BRIDGETOWN is a hamlet of this parish, forming a suburb to Totnes, with which it is connected by a bridge; the inhabitants and particulars are given with that place.
