Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Page 127   BICTON is a village and parish in St. Thomas`s union, containing, by the census of 1861, 166 inhabitants, and 1294 acres ; in the deanery of Aylesbeare, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of East Budleigh, East Devonshire ; 4 miles west from Sidmouth, and 11 south-east from Exeter. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Henry Kempe, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1844, at £170 16s. 11d. per annum, with residence and 50 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the trustees of the late Lord Rolle. The church is a neat edifice, in the early decorated style, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was erected by Lady Rolle in 1851, and consists of nave, chancel, and north and south transepts. The trustees of the late Lord Rolle are lords of the manor, which was originally held by the service of keeping King`s Gaol for the county of Devon, and Devonshire County Gaol was formerly situated here, and was removed to Exetr in 1518, but the lord of the manor of Bicton was responsible for the safe custody of the prisoners until the year 1787. Bicton House, the seat of Lady Rolle, is pleasantly situated in the midst of a well-timbered park. YETTINGTON is a hamlet forming part and parcel of this parish, in which there is a National School for children of both sexes. Clergy and Private Residents. KEMPE Rev.
