Contact.   Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by Sybil CAMERON   Pages 457 - 458   BLACKAWTON (or BLACKAUTON) is a parish and village in Kingsbridge union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1229 inhabitants, and 5646 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Coleridge, South Devonshire; 6 miles west from Dartmouth, 7 west from Kingswear Railway Station, and 9 south from Totnes. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Daniel Sutcliffe Chater, B.A., is valued at £112 per annum, with residence and 10 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Henry Gibbon, Esq. The whole of the tithes were commuted, in 1841, at £739 6s. 6d. per annum, subject to the vicar's stipend. The church is an ancient edifice, in the Early English style, dedicated to St. Michael, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower containing six bells; in the interior is a fine old Norman font. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here, and there is a National School for children of both sexes. There are some charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. Henry Limbrey Toll, Esq., is lord of the manor.   STREET is a hamlet and chapelry of this parish, about 4 miles south-east from thence, on the shores of Start Bay. The Chapel-of-ease is a neat edifice, dedicated to St. Michael, in the Gothic style, with an embattled tower, and was erected in 1836 by subscription, aided with a grant of £250 from the Incorporated Society; it has sittings for 400 people. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here, and there are National and Infant Schools for children of both sexes. Clergy and Gentry.
