Contact.   Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by Arthur FRENCH Pages 472 - 473   BROADHEMPSTON is a village and parish in Newton Abbot union, containing, by the census of 1861, 661 inhabitants, and 2047 acres; in the deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Hayter, East Devonshire; 3 miles south-east from Ashburton, 4½ north from Totnes, and 5 south-east from Newton Abbot. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. — Austin, had the tithes commuted, in 1841, at £266 per annum, with residence and 37A. 2R. 26P. of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. The trustees of Gunsley's Charity for Rochester and Maidstone are the impropriators of the rectorial tithes. The church is an ancient edifice (dedication unknown), consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, with tower containing five bells. The Independents and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There is a National School for children of both sexes. There are charitable bequests producing about £4 per annum. Mrs. Jane Palk is lady of the manor. BEASTON and FORDER GREEN are hamlets of this parish. Clergy and Gentry.
