Contact.  Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Not Checked   CORNWORTHY is a parish and village in Totnes union, containing, by the census of 1861, 479 inhabitants, and 2721 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Coleridge, South Devonshire; 4 miles south-east from Totnes, and 6 north-west from Dartmouth, near the confluence of the river Harbourn with the estuary of the Dart. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. James Beadon Rogers, B.A., is valued at £220 per annum, with residence and 35 acres of land, and is in the patronage of George Nosworthy, Esq. The church is an ancient Gothic edifice, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisle, with an embattled tower containing six bells. The Rev. Charles Barter, who died in 1846, in his 97th year, was vicar of this place 71 years. There is a National School for children of both sexes, which has an endowment of £40 per annum. There are also some charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. The parish is in the manors of Cornworthy and East Cornworthy, the Rev. William Newman being lord of the former, and Sir John Lewis Duntze, Bart., lord if the latter. ALLALEIGH, EAST CORNWORTHY, and TIDEFORD are hamlets of this parish. Clergy and Gentry.
