Transcribed by Sybil CAMERON Checked by Val HENDERSON Pages 502 - 503    DEAN-PRIOR is a village and parish in Totnes union, containing, by the census of 1861, 422 inhabitants, and 4165 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Stanborough, South Devonshire; 4 ½ miles sonth-west* from Ashburton, on the main road from Exeter to Plymouth. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Edward Chatterton Orpen, M.A., is valued at £282 per annum, with residence and 93 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Lord Churston, who is also impropriator of the rectorial tithes, which were commuted, in 1853, at £153 13s. 10d., and the vicarial at £228 per annum. The church is a handsome edifice, dedicated to St. George, consisting of nave, north and south aisles, with porch and tower, and has been rebuilt with the exception of the tower.
