Contact.   Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by Arthur FRENCH Page 543   OGWELL (EAST) ia a village and parish in Newton Abbot union, containing, by the census of 1861, 275 inhabitants, and 1249 acres; in the deanery of Ipplepen, acrhdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Wonford, East Devonshire; 2 miles south-west from Newton Abbot. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Fitzwilliam John Taylor, B.A., had the tithes commuted at £245 per annum, with residence and 26A. 2R. 21P. of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Daniel Robert Scratton, Esq. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, consisting of nave, chancel, north aisle, and transepts, with tower and three bells. In the chancel transept is the family vault of the Reynell family, and on the tablet over the window the word "Golgotha" is inscribed, and the letters R.R., 1633. There is a National School for children of both sexes, which has an endowment of £10 per annum, arising from four acres of land devised by Sir Richard Reynell in 1733. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £12 15s. per annum. Madrepore marble is quarried here, and iron and manganese mines are also worked. HOLBEAM is a hamlet of this parish.
