Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Page 407     FRITHELSTOCK is a village and parish in Torrington union, containing, by the census of 1861, 635 inhabitants, and 4382 acres; in the deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire; 2 miles west from Great Torrington, and 7 south from Bideford. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Augustus Brine, M.A., is valued at £110 per annum, with 60 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Francis Johns, Esq. The church is an ancient Gothic edifice, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Gregory, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, with tower and four bells. The Baptists and Bible Christians have places of worship here. A priory was founded here in the reign of HenryIII. by Sir Robert Beauchamp, of which some traces are still in existence; it is the property of Lord Clinton, who is lord of the manor, and he and Mrs. Stevens and the representatives of P. Thomas, Esq., are the principal landowners. There are some charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. STONE is a hamlet one mile from thence, and MILFORD is also a hamlet four miles west.
