Contact.   Transcribed by David GALE Checked by Val HENDERSON Page 405   TORRINGTON (LITTLE) is a village and parish in Torrington union, containing, by the census of 1861, 563 inhabitants, and 2880 acres; in the deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire; 2 miles south of Great Torrington, 8 south-east from Bideford, and 15 west from Eggesford Railway Station. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. George DeCarteret Guille, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1839, at £400 per annum, with residence and 44 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Hon. Mark Rolle. The church, dedicated to St. Giles, is in the Perpendicular style, and consists of nave, chancel, aisle, and porch, with tower and five bells; it was rebuilt in 1857. The Bible Christians and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There are charitable bequests producing about £35 per annum. The representatives of Mrs. Stevens are lords of the manors of Little Torrington and Taddiport, and with the Hon. Mark Rolle, Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, Bart., Peter T. Johnson, Esq., and Miss Buckingham, the principal landowners. TADDIPORT is a hamlet of this parish, which contains an ancient chapel, which was formerly attached to a Lepers' Hospital there.
