Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Pages 206 - 207       LYMPSTON (or LYMPSTONE) is a village and parish in St. Thomas`s union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1122 inhabitants, and 1400 acres; in the deanery of Aylesbeare, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of East Budleigh, East Devonshire; 2½ miles north-west from Exmouth, 3½ miles south-east from Topsham and 7½ miles south-east from Exeter, pleasantly situated on the east side of the estuary of the river Exe, on the Exmouth branch of the London and South Western Railway, at which it has a station. It was described by Leland in his history as a "pretty townlet," with a "great trade in shippes;" it is now a fishing station, and from it`s proximity to Exmouth is also a place of considerable resort during the summer season. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. W. H. Curtler, M.A., had the tithes commuted in 1848 at £264 per annum, with residence and 13 acres of glebe land, in the patronage of T. G. Cutler, Esq. A small manor is also attached to the rectory, which is let on life leases, at the expiration of which the value of the living will be considerably improved, as the lands will be let at the rack rent, and the proceeds will revert to the rectory. The church is a fine edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, north and south aisles, and chancel, with a beautiful tower and five bells ; it was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1864 ; the date of the tower is 1409. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. There is a National School for boys and one for girls, the latter having several small endowments.
